I received a notice telling me to appear for jury duty in the Palm Beach County Courthouse on July 5. Since I knew I'd be out of town on business on that date, I called the automated number and got a postponement to October 4.

Tonight I realized that October 4 was not a good date either, so I called the automated number again, with a specific date in mind that I knew I could appear. The automated voice said to choose #1 if you are over 70 OR are requesting a postponement, so I dialed #1. Then it asked me to type in my juror number which I did. The voice read the number back to me and it said to confirm if it's correct and I did.

Then a most peculiar thing happened. The automated voice said, "You are excused from jury duty at this time. No further action is required on your part." I am not over 70, not even close, so I'm not sure why I am being excused?

This is good news for me because I'm very busy, but I am wondering if this is some sort of a mistake? Does this sometimes happen where if you ask for a postponement, they just excuse you completely?

Is there a number I can call to speak to a live person to make sure I was given the correct information? I don't want any problems for refusing to appear.

If you are over 70 you don't have to serve on jury duty.

Right, but like I said, I'm not over 70.

It's very simple...they already have enough jurors or the case is no longer pending.

I've been through it more than once.

You guys actually respond to the jury duty requests? Kind of funny.

You realize they send out a boat load of requests because only 1/3 actually show up.........

I realize that this is an old thread but just want to say that not responding to an order to serve on a jury, it is not a request, is an offence for which you can be arrested.
