We were not comparing crime versus 1990s numbers. Of course crime has dropped during that time period. Crime in NYC saw historic drops during the same period. What we are talking about is crime in South Florida versus other parts of the country. I have seen the stats. I don't want to argue. Google the most violent cities in America for 2006 and 2007...you will surprised to see that about six or seven Florida cities including Pompano, Miami Gardens, Opa Locka, and others joins Detroit, Trenton, and some other violent places. Look it up yourself Mr. Tungsten. Is everyone lying?? When I lived in NYC and watched the news or read the local papers I rarely if ever saw violent crime in my neighborhood or in adjoining neighborhoods. I live in an affluent community here in West Palm Beach but if I watch the news or read the local paper I consistently read about shootings and robberies within a five mile radius of my home.

There are two South Florida cities in the "safest in America" category:

Port St. Lucie, which is #25 overall, and #10 in its population group, and Coral Springs, which is #10 overall, and #4 in its population group.

West Palm Beach is listed as #7 most dangerous city of its size in the nation. Again, however, if one was to pull out the "homicide" map, you'll find the crap concentrated in one particular area of the city, and up into Riviera Beach, which has always been a dump. I also live within 5 miles of that bad area, but that's pretty much life in South Florida, being stuck between the Everglades and the Ocean. If you lived on Palm Beach Island you'd be "within 5 miles" of the crap. Same with Singer Island.

Nonetheless, according to BestPlaces crime rates, New York City is a "6" on the violent crime scale, and West Palm Beach is a "7".... so not much difference to brag about.

As for dangerous "metro areas," Miami-Dade is 10th in the nation, the only Florida entry in the top 25, and after such "half back" paradises as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and two metro areas in Tennessee.

Don't listen to the negative talk. After 3 years of scoping out different parts of Florida, we found Boynton to be lovely. We must have asked 50 residents in the area we're moving to.

We are in a gated community though. Even on Long Island, NY where we're moving from are high crime areas....but where the better homes are the streets are safe and the school districts the 'best'.

Basically you get what you pay for and where we're going in Boynton Beach is paradise.

This is worth reading, too: Crime statistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's also worth checking out the references and bibliography there. The books mentioned have good bibliographies, too.

No they aren't...

City Crime Rankings by Population Group

And they actually got considerably worse for 2007. Coral Springs fell to 17th safest and PSL fell off the list.

Actually, the negative talk is there for a reason. You're just confused. Everyone on here that has described living in Boynton Beach as being good lives in West Boynton. It's not apart of the city. It's unincorporated. And since it's so large now they need to incorporate it as its own city and name it 'West Boynton' to avoid such confusion. Really, the two areas are not like each other at all.
