Starting today, you can check your property taxes online at the Property Appraiser's Website:

Did your taxes go up or down? My boss' taxes went up, but he isn't homesteaded for some unknown reason.

I, however, am excited today because my 2009 proposed notice represents a $1471 reduction from last year.

My house was purchased in 2008 as a short sale, and in 2008 I had to escrow taxes on what the PREVIOUS owner (non-homesteaded) was paying in 2007, which was $8,000.00! Taxes went down in 2008, and are down again, now under 4k.

For what it's worth, insurance on my home also went down 10% for 2009 over 2008. Barring any storms (knock on wood), I hope to have more options and better rates next year as well.

What about everyone else?

From a California web site...
Effective April 1, 2009, the State sales and use tax rate increases by 1%. In addition, if you are in a city or county that has a new voter approved local district tax rate increase effective on April 1, 2009, your overall tax rate increase will be higher. The combined statewide and district tax rates that apply as of April 1, 2009, are listed on the reverse side of the Statewide Sales and Use Tax Rate Increases on April 1, 2009. For more information about the additional new district tax rate increases, please see the New District Tax Rates to Take Effect on April 1, 2009.

is there an ignore button on here?

Yeah, I think non-homesteaded properties seem to have been affected negatively.

Edit: I take it back. I just checked my previous landlord's taxes for the condo I rented downtown. It's a non-homesteaded property and the taxes went down $1300/year.

So.... I have no idea!
