Soon they will create Section 8 Transportation to subsidize automobile ownership.
Right now CA localities are considering accepting food Stamps in resaurants (no kidding).
So why not expand the benefits to include Clothing Vouchers ?
Then we can move on to Entertainment and Grooming Allowances!

Ya gotta laugh!
They do offer free cell phones to low-incomes families in addition to utility vouchers.

My friend knows of a woman on SSDI who works at the Flea Market. She was complaining that the free cell phone plan the government is paying on a monthly basis for her wasn't enough. I believe they gave her the free cell phone, too. She claimed that 250 minutes isn't enough. So she got her own cell phone because she needed more than 250 minutes. Amazing!

I think they might give some free clothes away - not sure.

I fought for this country and now a disabled veteran who was issued a section 8 voucher. I come from a rich family. My kids are in college. I owned several businesses and paid taxes. You have nerve to discriminate. Ok what if I Judge all men who sat on their ass during war time or those who escaped to canada or hid behind politics instead of defending the country.

Ms NYC please come south to make a living. It is much cheaper. You can transfer any where. It is a shame how people judge others but they just jealous and haters. And maybe need section 8 later in life when they loose their job, or get disabled or get old with just one income. People never know how life changes.

Move south to make a good a living in... Florida? Surely, you jest!

If you're uneducated and unskilled, there's no place as unforgiving as Florida--very low wages/salaries, disproportionately high COL given the low wages/salaries, little to no union protection for line-level employees, employers rarely ever offer health benefits (even for office workers), very high employee turnover rates in most fields (even those requiring an education or certification), fierce competition for low-wage/low-skill positions (e.g., cashiers, receptionists, telemarketers, etc.) due to a huge uneducated/unskilled workforce, you can count on one hand how many Fortune 500 companies are HQ'ed in South Florida despite it being the sixth largest urbanized area in the US, an inept gov't that woos low-wage/low-skill jobs instead of well-paying ones (Amazon warehouse fiasco in PBC was a prime example of this), etc. All of this nonsense contributes to very high unemployment/discouraged worker rates.

Plus, South Florida is one of the most dangerous metropolitan areas in the country. You can very well be a victim of violent crime in even the nicest areas because the nice areas are almost invariably directly next to horribly ghetto, crime-ridden areas (e.g., PBG & Riveiria Beach, Boca & Deerfield, etc.). Living in Section 8 housing in South Florida would truly be a nightmare, IMO, since most of the metropolitan areas is as ghetto as all Hell. You'd be much better off in Section 8 housing in cities like Boise, ID or Portland, OR with very low crime rates by comparison.

Geesh, just when I thought I've heard it all...

Even if your educated and skilled you will probably earn less than the median salary (US Nationwide) in your field here. Some people try to make it work, sell themselves short and work for less, go into fields totally out of scope just to live the Margaritaville lifestyle.

Default You don't know who is using Section 8 or why.

Wow, I must say that I am truly appalled by some of these posts. They are quite judgemental. It's very unfair and saddening to be judged according to someone else's actions. I am not only a US Veteran, but I am currently a Custom Protection Officer in Wellington. I attended college studying IT and due to an unfortunate divorce, I am a single parent of two beautiful boys (one with Austism). Its been 8 years since I have received any help from their father, so aside from working a full-time job, I put myself on government assistance to help give my children a chance at a good life. I am using a Section 8 voucher to help put a decent roof over my family's heads. I am moving to Wellington to be close to the job and the kid's schools. I wonder, will I be welcomed as a US Veteran / Officer/ Single mother doing what she can for her family, or am I just another section 8 loser making the nice neighborhoods filthy.

Why dredge up a topic that has been inactive for four years to make a comment about how you're appalled? Many people are appalled that their tax dollars go towards supporting those who refuse to support themselves or choose to supplement their income with government money rather than working more or for a higher salary.

Nobody complained about you and your situation but to come here out of the clear blue sky and relate your story of woe will change nothing. Just keep yourself on an upward path so you and your kids can be self-reliant as soon as possible. Millions of people go through expensive divorces which severely impact their income. Millions of veterans are out here who don't pretend that being one gives them some special rights other than what is guaranteed by actual veterans benefits.

We are not impressed that your employer has trademarked a fancy name for a security guard nor should you, but keep your eye on the prize and if that's the work you choose to do don't let a fancy title substitute for decent pay, it won't help you pay your electric bill. It's better to be a "rent-a-cop" at twenty dollars an hour than a "Custom Protection Officer" at fifteen.

Lelind1103: I am with you. Most likely, you are doing what is necessary to safeguard the future of your children, since doing it alone is very difficult, as a single mother, and you are trying to find out good schools for them, plus you are trying to make sure they do not end up in a ghetto.....on drugs....if Wellington has Section 8, go for it.... I do not blame you..... we are supporting the world.......so let's start with our own people......who have fought in wars for us to be able to enjoy our pools......good-luck to you.....
