Unfortunate, but I mean, I pay extra taxes to have things like paved roads (where Westgate has parts that aren't even paved!) and code enforcement by the City of West Palm Beach!
I tend to not to have any reasons to drive around Westgate but I have made some short cuts through there a few times. I never hit a road there that wasn't paved? Maybe not paved in 30 years and looking rather ragged and pot hole ridden.

I avoid that area, because there's never a reason to be back there. I did, however, have the unfortunate experience last year of getting lost in Westgate, looking for the community park (did a Kickball league thing there).
It's entirely possible that I am mistaken, but I swear I remember distinctly remember driving over some really rough roads.
The point is, however, that nobody is ever going to live in that area if they have a choice. The choice isn't ever "hmmm...Westgage or Flagler Drive" for ANYONE.
You realize that area you are describing is probably not West Palm Beach. Sounds like you're describing the "West Gate" area... or the "no go" areas just north of the airport that are like the lands that everyone has forgotten. And I would agree -- probably not somewhere anyone on this board will want to live. I wonder though how much experience with the city you actually do have..
I get it that YOU live in the nice part of WEST PALM BEACH, and most times there is a short between my computer screen and brain, but since when is MIlitary/Ockechobee not WPB. I sure hope City of West Palm Beach, County of Palm Beach, West Palm Beach Polilce, Palm Beach County Sheriff, City of West Palm Beach Governing bodies finds this thread, because they apparently do not know where the borders of what They refer to as WEST PALM BEACH start or end. Corporate heads of Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Audi, BMW, Bentley and Maserati apparently do not know they incorrectly list their businesses in WEST PALM BEACH. LOWES also needs this thread..The actual City boundaries I think we all agree is near Downtown, however City or Unincorporated amounts to beauracratic check mark or lack of check mark so they do not have to spend money in certain areas..Everything East of I-95 is not WEST PALM BEACH..since when?.
I actually looked at living in Downtown WPB and all the Areas of WPB just outside downtown..I was doing this while still in Seattle... What the County counts as West Palm Beach goes from the Intracoastal right out to Military Trail..Actually it goes furthur but since we making up our own boundaries...Lets just say Military Trail.
And yes you are right 33444 Delray Beach has a much higher crime rate per Capita than West Palm Beach, however my new house is just off Atlantic Ave and Swinton so in my part of East Delray Beach...the only crime is paying $110.00 for a four drinks and two lousy hamburgers at "THE OFFICE".

I'm about to dip out of this conversation. I actually don't even live in the nicest part of the city, but I sure as hell don't live in Westgate.
Nobody ever said WPB doesn't extend West of 95, but the part that you're describing is not West Palm Beach. Get a map of the City:
See Military trail? See Okeechobee Blvd? See SOUTH of Okeechobee Blvd., WEST of I-95? That's Westgate. That's the part behind the dealerships, between Okeechobee Blvd. and the airport.
I rest my case.

I repeat (for the last time): Unincorporated areas of the county are usually referred to their nearest incorporated city, for simplicity sake only. There are parts of Western Delray Beach that aren't really Delray Beach, but are called "Delray" because it's the closest city to the east. Same with Lake Worth. "West Lake Worth" is actually "unincorporated Palm Beach County." The CITY of Lake Worth pretty much begins at I-95 and goes east.
Mercedes, Masserati, Lambourghini are all outside of the technical boundaries of the city. They are on the south side of Okeechobee Blvd. Lowes is also technically not within corporate boundaries. Those businesses do not pay extra city tax to the City of West Palm Beach for doing business, and don't have to go for extra permitting with the city when they build. If you work for one of those dealers, ask your boss what their dealings with the CITY (not the COUNTY) are.
Conversly, Braman BMW/Audi DOES have to deal with the city (and I believe Schumacher might also be within the technical boundaries as well), because they are within the city limits. Braman also had to contend with West Palm Beach regulations regarding dealership size.
There are consequences for being within an incorporated district vs. non.
For example, you will note a distinct difference in neighborhoods technically within the corporate boundary west of I-95 with a "West Palm Beach" address, and those that lie outside of the boundaries.

You would be correct if you're talking about certain areas West of I-95 and NORTH of Okeechobee Blvd. But that's pretty much the "Villages" neighborhoods, and that's a pretty good area of West Palm. Not comparable at ALL to Westgate!

Look, you gave good advice to tell people they don't want to live in Westgate. But West Palm has enough bad areas to not have to be saddled with the mess the county has wrought as well.
The better parts of West Palm Beach have that same feeling of the better or historic parts of Delray.
It's West Palm Beach, just unincorporated WPB not within the city limits though the average person won't know the difference and will refer to it as such. Like I said even though I live in Wellington I can use "West Palm Beach" as my city name on my drivers license and etc. I get packages sent to me often, eventhough I fill out the address as "Wellington" they arrive as "West Palm Beach".

The term the media likes to use is "Suburban West Palm Beach," I believe... that's usually the cue that its unincorporated. Much of the Acreage also has a "West Palm Beach" address... or "Loxahatchee."
Even so, with borders defined so liberally, the suggestion that downtown is the only place to live becomes even more silly... since the Acreage is a fine place to live for people looking for that lifestyle, as is Wellington (which I believe still gets called WPB sometimes because of its relatively newer status as an incorporated entity in its own right).
We just returned from our scouting trip and found an amazing community in Palm Beach Gardens...we're moving next month!
Thank you all for your advice. I referred to it often while we were checkimg things out. Again...I truly appreciated ALL of the comments. It was very helpful. We LOVED Delray but decided it wasn't the best place for us to move at this time. We enjoyed sushi at Lemongrass on Atlantic...we'll be visiting there often. Just loved it.
Now I have to face finding a preschool...anyone familiar with the schools in Palm Beach Gardens?

Seriously, what did you order to drink ? At 16$ a burger ($20 for the "BOSS") and $ 5.50 to $7 for basic beer-wine, that would total ~ $55 - $68, tax is a bit over 6 percent. Did you leave a $40 tip?
