My husband and I are relocating to Palm Beach County from Jackson, MS. He is planning on going to school in West Palm Beach at the digital domain school of FSU. Its a little overwhelming researching all the areas and hearing this place is safe this place is not.... We have no children but do have 2 dogs. We are looking to live in an apartment. Semi-close to the beach if possible. Any suggestions. Of course safety is our main concern. Our thoughts are Jupiter, Juno Beach, Palm Beach Gardens. What about Riviera Beach and Lake Worth? Only want to be about 20-30 minutes away from West Palm Beach which is where his school will be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What's your budget? You could very well just live IN downtown West Palm Beach if your budget permits.

No more than $1200. I was mainly concerned with the safety. I have read the actual city of West Palm Beach is not safe. Is this true?

Jackson, MS ranks in the top 10 of high crime areas, but I'm sure the entire area is not suspect, just like downtown WPB, there are parts that are safer.

The temporary campus is at City Place, you could literally live within walking distance if you chose to.

Has he been accepted yet? I know it's very competitive, only a 100 students chosen so a co-worker told me, his daughter was trying to get into the program, but will probably be going to Full Sail in Winter Park instead.

I would avoid Riviera Beach and downtown Lake Worth.

Keep in mind having pets will complicate your rental situation, near the beach most condos are by owner, many HOA's and owners don't accept pets. The rental market is very tight down here and you may have better luck going with one of the bigger commercial apartment complexes.

Also you will need to provide 1st, Last and Security Deposit for a rental by owner. So $1200 X 3 = $3600 up front when you sign the lease, it's very common here.

Where to live is dependent on if he will only be going to school 100% of the time, are you going to be working? Do you have a job lined up? Are you willing to commute?

1 bedroom or ?

Wow!! Thanks so much for your input! It helps to get advice from someone who lives there when we have no idea what we are getting into. I am a NICU nurse so will need a hospital close by... One that has a NICU. No he hasn't been accepted. Our plan was to move first and then a year after we move he will apply. Just so we can get comfortable with our surroundings first. We actually live in Brandon, ms. Its about 20 minutes outside Jackson. I think our best bet is to see the area ourselves as we have never been to south Florida. We were kind of wanting to go with commercial leasing complexes. At least 1 bedroom if not 2. Our pets are a must... They are our children

As THX says, there are PARTS of West Palm Beach that are not the safest.

The downtown core is fine. It's the northend parts that is the trouble area (responsible for over 50% of total crime).

How big are your dogs? Some buildings have restrictions based on breed and size. Under 30lbs. is usually the limit.

Be sure to have jobs lined up before you relocate here, the job market is very poor here currently. Also if your husband doesn't get accepted, what is the back-up plan? Not sure if you have a lot of $ to live off of without jobs, but I would not advise moving here unless you got plenty of it to live on as it may take a while to land work.

There are a number of commercial apartment complexes, if you go with one of those, you can typically avoid the big down payment as most only require a security deposit and pet fee.

There are a lot of options on where to live, If your set being a very short drive to the beach then that will place you in a range with less options, if your willing to drive further to the beach you will have even more options.
