Actually it's not any whiter than Clewiston. Just nice people there and it's very mixed with blacks, whites and hispanics, I agree with tallrick there. Clewiston is really rough all around and they have plenty of white people there.

I remember passing by Pahokee one time and it was honestly like those pictures you posted of Belle Glade, maybe even a tad worse. That was the one and only time I was going up 27 and I took the route that goes east of the lake.If I take 27 north I stay on 27 as South Bay, Clewiston although sad and depressing are better than Belle Glade or Pahokee!

Well Thank You All For Responding And Trust Me No Where In Miami Looks As Worst As Belle Glade. I Know Of Liberty City And The Triangle Along With 21st Street But People In Miami Had Said Belle Glade Is Alot Worst With The Decaying Property.

The buildings I saw in the pictures posted are the same style of buildings in most of "Old South Florida"...you see the same buildings, jsut as run down, in the urban areas. There is garbage everywhere....people making the environment worse....I guess I just disagree that Bell Glade is so much worse, I think people think it is worse than Miami because so many people have never seen this kind of poverty and squalor outside of urban ghettos.
The one interesting thing about Belle Glade is that the dirt is super fertile, so those feeeew and far between trees they plant there THRIVE like no where else in South Florida, the vegetation is increible, well the small amount that there is. They have some incredible Ceibas, banana plants, papayas, Royal Poincianas...that look as healthy if not more so than trees at Fairchild. All of this in such a depressed area adds the look to a third world tropical country....

So yeah I live in Okeechobee and believe me we get some people that come through that work at the youth center here in Chobee and they are beotches. But I remember watching on TV that Belle Glade is the AIDS capital for the country. Which I was shocked about. But I am not knocking anyone for having aids but I was just shocked about it. It is very sad and sad that people have to live in that atmosphere. My friends husband was the sheriff there. He lasted 3 months and they moved back to Kendall. He couldn't take it. lol

The muck soil is amazing around the Lake, you will see huge wild bamboo, and in the towns Ficus trees that make the others in Florida look like shrubs. Some empty lots where the grass is cut look like the yards of luxury homes. I prefer Labelle, but Clewiston had its fine points as well. While there are a mix of thriving and dead shopping centers on US-27 and some nasty looking apartments, between the highway and the levee there were some charming middle-class homes and friendly people. Before they demolished and rebuilt the junior high school it was an interesting historic set of buildings, along with the elementary school that reminded me of Coral gables. Another neat thing about the Lake area is that the towns were still distinct, you could see rural space between them. That's how all of south Florida was at one time.
While Belle Glade is known for its poverty and is mostly run-down you can still find some large well-kept homes in the area. The thing to remember is that the area is very rural, and you will have nothing to do unless you like fishing, hunting, etc. If the real estate bubble finally bursts and property in the LO area becomes affordable again, I am seriously considering starting an alternative energy business there. It's got more opportunity than Liberty City in my opinion.
