Default Where do people in South Florida like to vacation to in winter?

Obviously, up here in the north we like to come down to your area to escape winter. I have heard that people in South Florida like to take trips to places like Chicago or New York City in December or January just to experience winter for a little while. Personally I think it's a bit crazy but I guess I can understand in a way. I was chatting online with someone from Boca who's taking a trip to Chicago soon. They went 3 years ago in the winter & they were saying that they hope the weather is as nice this time as it was the last time they were there. I asked them "What do you mean by nice?" They replied "Ten inches of snow on the ground, temperatures in the teens with below zero windchills." I was like "We hate that crap!" They told me that they were outside all of the time doing things like shopping on Michigan Avenue, taking walks on Lakeshore Drive, and walking around Greektown & Chinatown. They said it was awesome to be outside & not sweat.

Do people in South Florida really like to vacation up north in winter?

Some folks like to take ski trips. We avoid city vacations when the weather is cold, although we have visited in the fall.

We usually go to the Caribbean in the winter, and go up north in the early summer. This time of year it's not that hot out that you sweat every time you go outside. In fact, it can be a little cool here during some parts of Dec and Jan (not cold, cool).

In the early summer we like to take a trip up north. It has usually not gotten really hot up there and it's been hot here for months. My kids only complaint came one summer when we went to the beach in early June and the water was really cold.

I don't know to many people who vacation up north in the winter except if they go to visit family. My husband has a client in Ottawa and he likes to visit them in the summer.

Why would you leave in the winter? except for the influx of "birds" and traffic. it's a great place in the
winter..Like to get out of town in the summer though during the hurricane season..then we go back to
Pa..got to get my mountain fix...of course there are other places to go in the winter that aren't cold.
was out in San Francisco recently and it was really nice...not hot, not cold...a light jacket. great place
to visit and if you rent a car take a trip up to the wine country either Napa or Sonoma...you won't be
disappointed.

I must be apart of the weird few because I LOVE going up north in the winter!! lol Not during a blizzard but definitely when it's still cold. It's actually my only sense of "normal". (If that makes any sense) I think it reminds me of how I feel that a city should really be in the winter. Cold and with regular people. Plus I get to wear all my cool winter clothes, cute boots, cute jackets, and feel a REAL Christmas/Thanksgiving. I can see and do things that I do not experience down here. Nevertheless, this is a great topic because I never really realized fully how much I love ALL 4 seasons. A small part of my reason to run outta here asap. lol

Let me put a different spin on this.

To me, the southern Florida summer is November to April, more or less, peaking January to March, and the southern Florida winter is roughly from May to September, peaking from June to August (agricultural production basically "dies" of too much heat in July-August, for example).

Therefore, during the southern Florida winter, when it is hot as hell and death reigns, I go to somewhere near the equator where it is always harvest time or the southern hemisphere where it is relatively cool.

I went skiing for the first time (well, I tried... lol.... me and skis aren't friends right now) last January. I really enjoy visiting wintry and cold locations in the winter months for short stints.... though I also went FURTHER South during the winter, to Key West, last February, and the weather was absolutely perfect (was still able to swim in the water and do water activities too).

Many people who grew up or are from the North say it doesn't "feel" like Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. unless it's COLD, but for some people, they've never known the season change. Others are used to the popular culture imagery of Thanksgiving and Christmas. We must also remember that in the Southern hemisphere, however, Christmas happens during the "Summer" and people get along just fine, as do the billion or so people who live in points much further South than Florida, around the equator!

I can't necessarily speak for everyone here, but for me...I love it! Well, below zero wind chills might be a little much. But I do look forward to being able to do stuff outside and not sweat. For the last 2 Thanksgivings I've spent the week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The year prior to those we went to Virginia for Christmas. Going to VA again in February, but for a wedding this time around. I'm hoping to get to see snow.
