Moving to Spencer in a few weeks
I live in Webster co. currently and in my opinion, anywhere would be better than Cowen. My father lived in Spencer for over 25 years and loved it there, so do I, as I visited him alot since I was 9 yrs old. I know it is tucked away from other towns and thats what I like about it. Does anyone here ever lived there or live there now and can offer advice? I'm buying an older home for a reasonable price in town, my kids will be going to spencer elementary and roane co. high. I'm excited about moving and kinda scared too.
ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

moving to spencer
Hay, we are getting ready to move to Spencer in the next month. We just purchased 31 acres 3 miles outside of town. I am really excited. I am so looking forward to it. We have met some of the nicest people there. Have you been to the Roane winery yet? My husband took me there and it is pretty nice. My son will be going to Roane county high also.

My family has been in Webster Springs and Cowen for generations. I myself lived in Spencer for 2 years some time back. Spencer is just fine as long as you don't require much. If you're into what most West Virginians are, (huntin & campin) then you'll do just fine. The trip to any town larger (Charleston) is about an hour. They have a Wal-Mart in Spencer, and according to the towns Mayor.. it really saved the towns economy. Spencer at one time had several good factories and the Spencer State Hospital. They're all gone now. So as long as you want a lot of peace & quite, Spencer might be Ok for you.

I grew up in Ripley, WV, which is about 25 miles west of Spencer on route 33 in Jackson County. I actually spent lots of time in Spencer over the years playing sports, and hanging out with some friends.
Spencer is a town with a lot of history, but it's best days might be behind them. The folks in Roane County are very friendly. I hope you enjoy living there.

hi..I'm hoping that some of the folks near Spencer-Reedy, Calhoun County could help me out. I'm thinking of buying a farm out there and have some questions about life in that neck of the woods. Can you tell me about the best parts of living and the downsides, if any? My interests are: fishing, farming, country-western music, horses, low to no crime, church, being a good neighbor, raising kids in a clean environment, and meeting down to earth traditional Americans living in the area. Thanks!

I grew up in and around Spencer in the mid 70's and throughout the 80's, During that time it was a fairly busy town. During the weekends there was a lot of action downtown, hotrods and people out crusing, But when Norris Industries closed down it crippled the local economy, them Monarch rubber cut back and the State hospital closed and was demolished, a few years later Wal-Mart was built on it's site. A lot of jobs were lost and people began moving away. A new high school was built around 1990, Rt. 119 and Spencer H.S. and Walton H.S. were merged to become The Roan county Raiders.
The old high school in spencer is now the elementary school and the former elem. school is now a nursing home. Nowadays Spencer is a much quieter town, it has always been a good place to live, My brother and I grew up there, and after graduation, and the closing of Norris ( where our mother worked) we moved away, each going seperate ways.
I still own the family farm and return 2 or 3 times a year for up keep, It's still a great place to live, and the folks are friendly, but jobs are scarce, and it's a long drive to Charelston, or Parkersburg. But you never know, someday we may move back.
Spencer still has a bowling alley and a skating rink, and then there is charles fork dam for fishing and camping, it now has a Wal-Mart and Autozone, It had a Pizza Hut but it closed down, It has a nice library, and there are several restaurants locally. Spencer is a nice change of pace from the rat race of a bigger city, and an excellent place to raise kids.

Hi all, I guess I have a common desire. My wife and I are looking to move to spencer for the rural way of life, bring along our desire and equipment to have a small farm etc. I have seen alot of folks say there is min. amount of work in the area. I am curious if there is an automotive repair shop in town. I would prefer a general maint. type of shop over a dealership or tire company. Anyone have any suggestions? I might be able to be talked into running a small shop as well depending on the avaiability and need of the town. Mostly I want to raise my 2 boys in a good strong community where I can feel safe. Thanks so much...Edward
