oh boy do i want to get in the middle of this..i'm not sure what all the debate is between north and south wv..i am still trying to find my way around here..OH GEEZ here I go..............

I had to change my attitude about being here i knew we could go no other place due to the illness in the family.......My dh and i fought tooth and nail about this place..It literally sucked us dry...............but WE didn't plan ENOUGH..sure we came in with BIG money but not the smarts for the area.......Most know here i tried like heck to get a job to no avail.........I hate to say this but I think it threatened many to hire an outsider...........I have NEVER had trouble finding work as a nurse anywhere till here. I also came in with the idea sure i can take a drop in pay JUST never realized how much..Dh retired law enforcement..The job market for HIM was the pits...WE WERE both floored........money ran out family illness got worst we LOST everything and I mean EVERYTHING except our home.........SANITY was completely gone our marriage was almost over due to this move I was so BITTER and disgusted by what happened since we moved here...........The school system was a joke for a special need teen..Glad that's over now since he graduated last year.........This place or was it: was sucking the life out of me/family..i was treated as an outsider even with the family..I was thought to be better than them......i came from Great wealth and I paid dearly for it with the FAMILY..Now with no credit money sanity left WHAT THE HECK DO YA DO..i bottomed out..But it wasn't the Place it was ME on how i handled things..how i approached things..i expected too much too quick.....well for this place anyway..So i knew we couldn't leave so i found WHAT worked for us........DH finally had to do a change of career in otr ............NOW try that on for size....i'm stuck in a place I hated in the beginning and now he leaves me to go over the road trucking for 3-4 weeks....Finally that got better with a wonderful co..OUT of WV.....OMG i love these people..I got a job in what i want to do starting on the 24th......DS will be in an adult educational program for the MR...........but i worked hard to find these things......They did not happen overnite..I talked to everyone i never gave up i kept looking for the answers i needed to move to the next level.........Got to know the people..Realized Material things and instant gratification does not work for many here and def. not for me........I never sold myself short..never gave up my ethics or morals..I found what makes this place feel like HOME................ i have oodles of education 3 degrees including Master's..i have learned to compromise...I have learned to SLOW down and really enjoy what this place has to offer........as i said before i have humbled myself graciously and thanking every day for this DRASTIC teaching experience of life.............There's more to living than HOW MUCH u make HOW WELL u live how u compare to the jone's..I had all that before and now i can say I am a much better person for losing it all.............NOW if MOTHER can only see it.......well that's another story.......she is still trying to find WV on the map..It's not in her vocabulary..................oh boy i rattle way to much. Bottom line :i do WHAT is best for MY family at any cost..

First off, the "closed minded, ignorant redneck welfare rebel" that is bringing this state down as you claim isn't limited to the southern areas of the state as you would have others believe. I believe uneducated and with limited opportunities is a better way to describe these people but I know for a fact that they exist in the northern part of the state as well. It isn't all business suits and bluetooth up there like the picture you paint.

And resentment? No resentment here. I recognize that this state needs to change several things if it's future potential is to be fully realized. While education of our residents is one of the major areas (which by the way will take a lot longer to do if the WVU leaning legislature continues to limit funding for Marshall and restrict their degree offerings), the major problem is our backwards thinking government. There are too many pork projects that are enacted by those in power to their own regions rather than putting the money where it needs to go, into our major cities and universities. Many parts of WV are dying but nothing is being done by our government to allow these areas to reverse the trends. The best example, the new exit being built in Fairmont. This project is completely unnecessary and has gone waaaay over budget all so a town of less than 20,000 can get a 5th exit 1/4 of a mile from the old downtown exit. But where is our governor and the district congressman Alan Mollohan from? Fairmont! And what is Mollohan under investigation for right now? Illegally funding projects in his own district which happens to be, Northcentral WV. Here's the link.

And Confused T, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you from Florida and had to change to suit the difference of living in WV vs FL? We are glad to have you here by the way and glad you love this great state.

Sorry to rant like I did above but in my opinion, that is the greater problem with this state, it's leaders. With this type of corruption, only certain areas are given funding while others have to earn it or find other ways to fund much needed upgrades/new opportunities.

No argument about the political corruption...personally hoping that some will serve prison time for their greed.

And there's no pre judgement about the southern part of the state being less than anything. In a previous blog I said that the northern part of the state was getting the lion's share of the money...They are...WVU is the money generator and it is competing with Pitt, Carnegie and Penn State...it must prevail to stay afloat. Other powers decided years ago that medical research would be done on a great scale in Morgantown. David Hardesty was the driving force behind most of this effort. He is to be commended. (Senator Byrd and the Ruby family are to be thanked too, as their interest have not been self serving but for the general welfare of the public)

So much of this is driven to stash money in certain peoples pockets.
If your really interested...WATCH THEM and make them work honestly...(or run for office and make a difference.)
Throw them out regularly and elect new ones...why would someone pay thousands or millions to get elected to these positions unless there was a return on that money. (Don't think Rocky doesn't own a lot of WV....land, timber, coal and coal mines, factories, ect.)

We're not at odds here at all.. as an epolog: Many of the 'closed minded, rednecked wellfare rebels' were created with the LBJ War on Poverty fiasco of the 60's 's and they are victims of that public relations scheme.
The worst fear a politician has is he will be caught...his second fear is an educated voter will vote him out.
We have deserved what we got, because we did not care...that is changing and scaring the H@@@ out of them.

What if Hillary was the Dem candidate and Cecil Roberts told the UMWA to vote Republican to save the union and the coal industry (an industry that Clinton/Gore killed)...Now...THAT's a CHANGE...or hypothetical speculation...we shall see in the near future.

Yes, I commend T on her ability to adapt and become a fighter. You have to be a fighter to succeed in southern WV. She is more of a West Virginian now than some of the natives posting here.

As for change, is it always good? We have a very strong ethical and moral family oriented lifestyle here in the south. Not to say there aren't problems but believe it or not, these are addressed in a more enlightened manner than in other areas.

Take for example, drugs. The days of throw em in jail and let em rot are over. Mercer County has a pilot program for a new Drug Court where non violent, non felony offenders are sentenced to an intensive program of probation emphasizing education, employment and rehabiliation.

Lack of employment opportunities is changing to as more businesses relocate here and the tax base expands with retirees relocating to the area.

So sure there are some hollers I have to go to because of my occupation that look as though they haven't changed in 100 years. I find it charming and refreshing to navigate around goats in the road. The people who live there may be "poor" economically but most are self sufficient and happy.

Nope, they don't like outsiders and outsiders are anyone who doesn't live there. But because of my work, I'm not challenged.

This is the WV you want to change but you have to understand these people don't want to change. They are NOT materialistic. They don't care if they have a Bluetooth headset. They have their families and their church, their gardens and a few hogs or cattle to slaughter. They hunt and fish. They don't buy on credit. If they don't have the money, they don't get it. They fix what they own themselves. They don't hire carpenters, plumbers or mechanics.

I'd guess you'd call that backwards. Maybe it should be forwards given the number of foreclosures in the country due to people overreaching their income.

And what I especially love about this area is that the wealthy people have exactly the same mindset as the poorest person eking out an living. You can't tell one from the other.

That is something government can't change and it is not something we want changed.

So keep it up north. And I don't like this south vs north either but I didn't start it.

Getting back to April Smith's request:

Another primitive area...(and I say that as a great complimentary gesture), that is within 1 hour of the Morgantown Medical Community is the Preston and Tucker County Region...Rowlesburg, Parsons and Kingwood/Bruceton Mills rate an A+ in my book.

With Parsons being the all time favorite and always will be. Has everything from yuppies to puppies and looks like 1890. All the recreation in the world is on the top of their mountains...

Thinking about moving to Northern WV (Tucker Co. area). Tired of the "rat race" and need a change of pace. I am in love with nature and think I can adjust to a slower pace. My research shows that jobs are hard to come by. Any suggestions??
