All while losing millions upon millions of dollars.

My sister shipped me fresh canned salmon from Alaska to Inwood WV- maybe 4-5 dozen cans, so pretty heavy. Flat rate shipping (it was cheap) and I received 3 days after she mailed it.

That's a hell of a bargain (and the salmon was damned tasty too- lemon pepper salmon fresh from the river to the cannnery to me.. Mmmmm )

They do lose money, too much I will agree. However they also have a mission to operate in rural areas, which by and large are going to be operated at a loss.

Wages and bennies could be adjusted to fair compensation, but operations will never be break even if they continue to provide the level of services to all Americans. That means states like WV would see a lot of rural post office closures. Or maybe turned over to Wal-Mart.

Just how much do you use them? Overall, service is deteriorating and at the same time getting progressively more expensive. They cater more to bulk mailings of junk mail than they do regular mail these days. There should be an "opt out" provision for that crap, but there isn't because there is too much postal revenue involved.

I send out Priority Mail documents all the time for work.

I use the branch in Star City and occasionally the one in Point Marion...I've never waited more than 10 minutes even during rush hour. Usually it's more like a 2 minute wait. And I've never seen more than one person in line at the Point Marion branch in my life. Maybe I don't get the same awful experience as those using the Morgantown/Charleston/bigger city branch? I don't know.

O.K. Fine with me. We are paying one way or the other. Make them at least break even (that doesn't mean all post offices have to be profitable) or shut them down.

That means postal employee's will have to do like the rest of us and pay for some of their benefits and we'll have to accept increases in rates.

I wonder that if you actually did a full accounting if they are profitable or not?

What amuses me about goverment jobs and people that are irate about them is that ALL American jobs used to be like that. You'd get a good salary, good benefits, good pension. But then the powers that be started shipping the good manufacturing jobs overseas...they started cutting benefits...they started making people shoulder the cost of healthcare more and more.

And now the American job is total crap. The only good jobs are with the government or as a high level professional. We've let the ruling elite wealth class dictate to us what a job should be. And now we are tearing down the workers that have it as good as everyone used to.

And people wonder why there is no middle class anymore.

I make $26 an hour but I've still had to contribute more to my health care.

We have to compete with China so things have to be done to remain competitive. The Post Office competes with no one so they've been under no obligation to watch costs.

I was wrong above. They lost billions, not millions last year.

My P.O. Box is at the main post office. I can assure you that your experience is not the same as that at the busier locations. In fact, there was an article in yesterday's Dominion Post about the awful situation and the Postmaster's goal of changing it. I won't be holding my breath for it to happen.
