Default Where's the retail?

Ok the casino is making money for Jefferson County and the state. But where is the retail we were hoping that would follow? Charles Town/Ranson needs a movie theater, a wholesale club, electronics store etc.

I am ok with the current Ranson mall. Like the five guys. If the casino is bringing more tax revenue in to the county than I am all for it, especially if it helps to pay for our schools. I know what you mean though. I hate driving to Martinsburg or Leesburg just for retail!

You may want to give it more than 8 months. This is not exactly the best economy right now. Also, I'm not sure why you would think that those would necessarily follow. Most players at CTown are from about an hour or more away, and we have those things already. It will take a while for the economic base of the town to grow from the extra jobs and support more retail.

I already spend more $$ in CTown than I did previously, but the majority of that outside the casino is at gas stations or fast food. Any new retail is going to depend on local dollars, not casino goers.

People that travel to the casino don't care about the "retail" options in the community. They are there to gamble and LEAVE.

Exactly,

They're likely coming from somewhere that has plenty of retail. They're not there to shop, they're there to engage in trashy behavior.

Obviously the ultimate hope would be for the Casino to bring in enough jobs that the local residents have money to spend at Costco or whatever. Unfortunately, this won't be so effective if t00 many of the jobs are of the low paying variety (security, bartender, or whatever). You'd really need more management and above level jobs to create a brand new, better retail environment.

Okay, despite what you may think, enjoying an afternoon or evening gambling and having a meal is not "trashy behavior". If it's not your cup of tea, fine. Also, it appears you missed the part of the article that described how there were 470 new dealer positions, averaging $55,000/yr income. That's $25.9 million a year introduced into your area's income base. Dealers make some of the best money; in casinos, most supervisory and middle managers make less than the dealers.

More retail will bring more traffic. While I would like a better Walmart (ours has gone downhill in what they stock) I can live without the extra traffic. This isn't Frederick or Leesburg thank God.

As for the casino I agree on the jobs not to mention the jobs on the horse side which wouldn't be here without the casino.
