I know that 15 years ago that 2 gay guys owned a bar on Rt 11, but weather it was gay bar or not I do not know as I have never been in any bars! & no I do not know if the guys still own it.
Ummmm...... I am not "hard up" (I already have a husband), but I think that is funny how you said it. I just like to find a nice place to crash and have a good drink and relax after the wedding hooplah. I love my family, but I need to be some place that is a little real after having to deal with them.

The only place I knew of was Scruples on Winchester Blvd. It was a neat place, but I think it is the Millenium Club or something like that. I know that there was rumblings about setting up a place near Downtown, where the Blue Ridge Outlet used to be, but I do not think that materialized.

[quote=FireballFL;1165101] I like the historical aspects of Downtown. All the old buildings from the late 19th century and early 20th century is still intact. Big business could have came in and took it over, but the city leadership was smart about keeping the historic aspects of Martinsburg. Martinsburg was one of the few towns that changed hands between the North and the South during the American Civil War.

True, unfortunately they do not do much with them. Granted, it was Gaston Caperton who finally remodeled the Round Houses and made a historical site out of Belle Boyd's home.
The old Berkeley/Gateway is still a fire trap, the streets are dirty, and in the evening, well that's another story. Basically, there is little pride in comparison to Sheptown, CTown, and BS.

Know of all the areas you speak. Both you and Herd make me feel like an old man. Lived in the B'urg and Hootersville from 1964-1992. Graduated from Hootersville High and attended Shep Tech. Ended up undergrad from American with my MS from Tulane. Of course today its more for me to state 7 years from retirement instead of 7 years out of school. LOL.

What was really to bad was when Chatfield spent a couple million bucko's to purchase the old interwoven mills and create the outlet malls. My grandparents worked those old mills in the 20's and 30's and I said Wow! The Burg is going to come to life! Unfortunately, Charleston loves to maintain their rank in holding the highest business tax rates in the nation along with the 6% clothing tax rate. When Hagersbush came on strong and Pa having a zero clothing tax, the outlets went the way of the mills. Of course today what do we have? Government in control of the current buildings they helped vacate.

Sign of the times I guess.

Very sad state of affairs. Hate to bring this up, but I was comparing Martinsburg to New Hope to someone. New Hope is in Pennsylvania and it is a cute little, artsy town. If enough gay couples moved into the town, it could change the city and make it far different, but I do not think the people there would be open to that sort of change. Maybe they would be. If it brings business and even makes the town a location of many tourists, then who cares? :O)

I have been told that Shepherdstown has a large gay population. I think the Yellow Brick Bank restaurant is a local gay friendly establishment. I will say you do have a point. My wife and I have 2 friends who are gay and we kid around about them having the best yard and house decor in the neighborhood.

Sheperdstown has been quoted as being one of the best, smaller towns that are gay friendly in some of the gay magazines. Even when I attended Sheperd back in the late 90s, I knew that this was true because all the locals were friendly and they did not care if you were blue.

Default Martinsburg

just an update to an old post. I heard through the grapevine that there is a gay bar in the works... opening in Martinsburg wv!!! woohooo..

Also to find out what is happening in the area go to Use the Internet to get off the Internet! - Meetup.com and search for out 4 fun. It is a LGBT group out of Martinsburg.. we have alot of activities.. =)

Hagerstown has the Gourmet Goat with Wed night happy hour all night for the LGBT and friends group.. small mix, nothing to drive out of your way for though..

The Peking relocated from the GatewayHotel building in '02 to a newly renovated building near the old courthouse. Great place, great atmosphere http://www.gdaaia.com/peking.htm

Interwoven Mills is being re-adapted for a mixed-use facility:
Interwoven Mills

The Newberry Business Center is an award winning re-use of old retail to office space. The old Rockwell Office supply building is now home to a small wine and spirits shop as well.

Benson Fogle has invested in renovating the historic Shenandoah Hotel Building. He's got like 3 million or more in the project thusfar.

There was a new Irish Pub and Italian restaurant on Queen St. as well (at least before I left).

It's really starting to change in Martinsburg. There now exists a core of new property owners that are really investing in the downtown region. Not a bad place to look for good downtown properties. I think Martinsburg DT will be a 'place to go' in a few more years..
