Not too familiar with section 8 housing, but from what I do know, a lot of that type of housing does tend to be in areas that have a little higher crime. I found a website for section 8 housing in Huntington that may help. I'll post the link at the bottom. Big_Al, do you blame the people for finding the assistance that is out there, or do you blame the system for the way it is set up? I think it is somewhat unfair to make a statement like you made without knowing someones situation. Anyway, here's the link and I hope this helps you out.

#1 I did not read where he was moving to WV for Disability. But If he is so what, this State has no jobs which is one of the requirements. If he get his own SS then he has earned if if he needs it. But I will also say if is SSI he is better off where he is. As each state has different benifits An each time you move you finacal need is reassed [hope i am spelling this right or close enought for you to get my meaning] Anywayas things like rent & utilities change so does the amount you recieve acording to the state. AND If you move out of state you get the joy of starting all over again!!!

Section 8 is NOT public housing. once you are approved you then must look for a place to live that is approved by HUD standards. No matter what you earn your rent is 30% of your income & possibly none to all utilities. And for someone that has a min wage job it is a big help.

Public housing only difference is you qulify, you get on a wait list They call when they have an apt, no messing with finding a place, being aproved by landlords & worrying if the place will pass inspction.

ADD ON TIP If you are on sec 8 and have been on it for 1 year you can then use it anywhere in the US move whereever you want all you need to do find housing in the area you want to move to. Can not do this with Public Housing.

That's 1 reason I am on the list for Sec 8.

First ..there are alot of jobs In Huntington and the state...
I guess you havent really researched or maybe you dont want a job...Amazon.com is there and a ton of telecommunication companies are there also...they have the univeristy and hospitals and they just built a huge shopping center in the middle of downtown...
section 8 in huntington has some places in bad areas but they also have houses that are on the program ..you just need to research and find the area you want to be...I am relocating back in Feb..and plan on living in the west end...you can check out section 8 for Huntington, Barbousville..West Moreland all that are with a few minutes of downtown...I do not think that the projects oh hal greer are section 8 but dont quote me because I havent been on it in Huntington I am on it in Houston because of Hurricane Katrina so I dont know the requirements..all I am saying is I still have friends there and that I know for a fact that alot of houses are section 8 also...the projects on Hal Greer are not the only ones you have Adams Landing and Marcum Terrace of Norway avenue, the ones on Bridge street and the ones near the Vocational Center when you search for them they are listed under Housing Authority...they dont just group all people that need assistance into the projects... You dont have to live in the middle of the city and if you dont want to live in Huntington but work there you can live across the river in Ohio or Kentucky...
as with town that you live in of course there are bad areas ...you just need to research the area find people on line that are from there and ask them...read the local paper and see if the high crimes in huntington are the high crimes you have been around in your location that you reside in now...check out HDonline.com that is the local newspaper you can search apts, jobs and the crime....
