I tend to view the break-up of Virginia like some traumatic experience during formative years. When Lincoln asked opinions of his cabinet on West Virginia's statehood I believe Montgomery Blair gave the most reasonable and correct view, that you do not break up states just because of sectional differences, because almost every state has sectional differences.
Lincoln's interference in Virginia was traumatic, it aborted the natural growth and development of the state. Virginia was the greatest competitor to New York before the Civil War, and if Lincoln hadn't tried to play God then Virginia and West Virginia together would have achieved great things.
Although Virginia and West Virginia could not get together again, I think it would be a good thing if the two states formed a partnership on many levels, such as treating each others colleges as "in state", and perhaps building a better infrastructure to bind them together.

I think Lincoln's idea was the 'idea of the time, bobilee.
Afterall, Texas and Calififornia were supposed to be broken into smaller states....the government had not got around to it...
With WV attached to Virginia...they were the biggest state in the US at that time...significant as an elector...

There is some reciprocity between colleges.

Morgantown might get some money, but southern WV would be royally screwed if this ever happened, and so would Charleston.

They could just sell Southern WV to Massey and Arcellor Mital, ****, they basically own the state anyway.
