In West Virginia, 10-20,000 is a fair sized city. There are only five cities in WV with more than 20,000: Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, and Wheeling. Elkins, for example, is about 7,000.

Beckley would be an excellent choice.

17,000 in city limits

10-15 mins from the New River Gorge

2 hospitals (3 if you or your husband is a veteran)

and its pretty safe too, especially in the Woodcrest or Maxwell Hill neighborhoods, though Woodcrest is more scenic butting up against the Piney Creek Gorge. Also, if you want to live outside the city, Stanaford Acres also provides excellent views of the PC gorge, while being within 6-8 mins of a hospital.

I was visiting in Cripple Creek, CO and overheard a local say he was anxious to travel "back east" to see some greenery. You will see beautiful scenery in West Virginia like you see in Colorado. A big difference... there is greenery in the mountains here rather than rocks. In general, they aren't as high above sea level as you have there but "base to summit" there is not all that much difference since ours start closer to sea level. Our base elevation is maybe 200 feet while yours in general is maybe 5,000 feet.

Elkins is a lovely little town, and while it isn't in the mountains per se, it is close enough to them.

Default Charles Town, WV

We are also considering relocating to Charles Town, WV from CO for a career opportunity that may be coming my way. What is the climate there as far as diversity and how would an interracial couple with small children be received?

I wouldn't anticipate any issues for an interracial couple in Charles Town or within Jefferson County. Hope that the job opportunity works out for you.
