Default Teacher's Union

How strong is the teacher's union in WV? Is it expected for a teacher to be a member in most districts? What are the monthly dues if so?

I'm hoping not strong. Union dues in CA are too much and I personally disagree with most that they stand for.

WV Teachers are split with NEA and AFT both being representatives for the teachers with the legislature.

There is no collective bargaining law in WV but most of what would be negotiated is in the WV School Law book(s). This is because the teachers are strong enough to control quite a bit of the legislation that passes or doesn't pass most of the time.

Annual dues are close to $500.

It's generally accepted as customary to join either union. From my experience AFT is more predominant in the state.
