Smile Nice things that happen in WV

People mention how friendly and helpful the people are in West Virginia.

On nice weekends I try to use one of our antique cars. Saturday as we left the resturant in Mannington the car wouldn't start. Raising the hood, I noticed that it was just a dirty battery terminal. Before I could clean it and
start the car, four (that's 4) people had offered me help, and I was parked
out of the way. That's what West Virginian's are all about.

Another story happened in Germany two years ago. My son was stationed at the Ramstein Hospital and tended to the wounded as they were coming from Iraq and Afganistan. In a telephone conversation, I told him to look after the West Virginia boys and girls coming through. He laughed at me, until I told him that all West Virginians are family and more of them serve in the armed forces than any other state.
He began doing that and about a week later met a wounded Sergeant that he knew in high school. My son called the parents and set the situation at ease and met them when they flew to Germany to be with their son. They phoned us when they returned and related all this to us...

Anyone else have a similar story or situation that they would want to relate?

The following Letter to the Editor appeared in the February 2, 2006, edition of the Pocahontas Times. By the way, the local regional airport to which he refers is probably Lewisburg, about 40 miles away.

Quote:
Dear Editor:
Recently we were in Marlinton and had an accident in the mountains and rolled our car. The state police told us there was no rental car place anywhere close, but that the local Chevy dealer rented cars; he was sure that he only rented locally. He gave us the names of the two brothers who run Marlinton Chevrolet dealership and told us to call them.

So the next morning I called Sam Mitchell at his house at 8:30 Sunday, hoping he would be able to give us a vehicle we could drive to the local regional airport where we could get a rental car we could take back to Virginia. Well, he said they had rented all their cars out, but he would see what he could do.

He called me back at the hotel and got my room number, then he showed up and picked me and my friend, Joe, up. He drove us by the Chevy dealership and showed us where to drop the vehicle and keys off.

Then he drove up to the local church and got out and said just fill it up and drop the truck back off at the dealership. He gave us his personal truck which was a fully loaded Duramax diesel. I didn't know what to say; he said all he wanted us to do was fill up his truck and drop it off. He didn't know anything about me except my name was Thomas, we had a car accident and we were stranded. I just would like to have his kindness returned. You just don't see this anymore.

Sam Mitchell truly saved us from being completely stranded hundreds of miles from home.

Virginia Beach, VA

Do you remember the name of the resturant in Mannington?

Mario's of course...best Italian food in central WV.
Pauley was from New York City, married a local girl and came to West Virginia...the rest is history.
Rented an old Tastee-Freeze that had sat idle for 10 years...elbow grease and a great personality has brought them instant success for over 10 years.
Best breakfast is Pauley's Special Omelet..1 pound of everything you can think of delightfully wrapped inside 3 eggs..toast and home fries done to perfection...hangs over the plate on 2 sides...cost $6.25
