It's interesting that you mention that. I have friends from the Pine Grove and Jacksonburg areas, and those areas have a northern Appalachian accent but it has decidedly more of a southern Appalachian twinge than further to the east (like Monongalia County). I think Wetzel is also influenced by the Ohio River dynamic including a heavy Parkersburg influence. Just my impression.

I played football in college with a guy from Pine Grove, WV. I always thought he had the funniest accent. He was very articulate for a guy our age. Almost had the Ontario accent when he said "about" and "out". Helluva nice guy, and could sure pound the ball up the middle. He was a bruising Fullback that played in 3 state championship games.

Thinking back to when I was growing up in Pine Grove, I don't recall much of a "Parkersburg influence." Not that I was paying much attention to it then . But it seems to me that places like Clarksburg, Fairmont, Morgantown and Wheeling (occasionally Pittsburgh) were the places people would go to shop, for medical care beyond the one GP on the Shortline, etc. Parkersburg was at least 1.5 hours away, and that was "too far" to go for anything.
I imagine Hope had a lot to do with that. Many of the people that Hope would transfer in seemed to come from Clarksburg or Fairmont. And my paternal grandmother's family was from around Fairmont, too, so we tended to think in that direction. (I was born in Fairmont General, for example).

They are are the places to go for these things in WV, especially for medical care. It is known that Morgantown has the best hospitals in WV.

Someone must have forgotten to tell Health Grades and Carechex, who actually rank such things using outcomes and patient satisfaction rather than subjective preference.

Patients also rate chiropractics higher than doctors. Those hospitals there treat few people and not folks from all across like in morgantown. It is a hospital for all people from wv and not a select few like in huntington. Sorry public health offends you

They have a lot of big folks in Wetzel... many German and English descendents. Valley High School has always had a good football program for a small school.
I definately didn't notice a Parkersburg (MOV) accent from my friend in Pine Grove. I associated it more with Wheeling.
Everyone knows that Charleston and Huntington have the prettiest nurses in WV, i mean, it's just common knowledge.
I agree the Wetzel accent is more northern Appalachian, but there is definitely a little southern drawl when compared to further north (midwestern), or further east (definitely northern Appalachian). I say that as a Wheeling native living in Morgantown. But to you guys from Charleston, we probably all sound the same.
I've never been hospitalized in either Charleston or Huntington, so I can't comment about how pretty the nurses are but I'm sure they are pretty. My ex is from the Charleston area and she's pretty.

Perhaps. I personally know some beautiful nurses from Charleston. Can't comment on Huntington.
