Question Weirton and surrounds

Planning on moving to WV but not sure about the state. I've heard horrible stories about the towns bordering Pennsylvania. I was told to stay clear of Weirton, and Follansbee township as well as other cities/towns in that area. But it seems much of the other places in WV (Charleston, Morgantown etc) are over priced. Any information would be definitely appreciated.

I'm going to bump this thread, as I'd like to know as well. Is Weirton better or worse than Steubenville OH?

Default Weirton is a great place!!

Hello!! Weirton has lost some population over the years due to a decline in the Steel industry. This is true. However, my wife and I moved here last year from PA! We love it here. Marland Heights area of Weirton is heaven on Earth. Cost of living here is great!! There are about 132000 people still proud to call the Weirton, Follansbee, Steubenville, Wintersville Metro area
home. The people here are friendly. Everyone says hello, kids playing, a cool deli with ice cream shop, an ice cream truck that runs til 9 pm or so in the summer. we have parks, golf courses, pools, etc. There are alot of great places to eat, cafes, casinos, minor league hockey team in Wheeling, WV 25 miles away as well as a casino. Mountaineer casino is 15 minutes north of here in Chester, WV. Jamboree in the Hills near St.Clairsville, OH is an awesome Country Music festival with top famous acts each year in July. Also, Post Gazette Pavillion who has hosted large Pittsburgh area concerts since 1990 has hosted Billy Joel, Dave Matthews, KISS, Mellencamp, Aerosmith, Live, and many other HUGE concerts...10 minutes from Weirton. Steubenville, OH is across the river 5 minutes away. It has a decent shopping mall with good stores. Robinson Town Centre is a huge Metro Pittsburgh shopping area, one of the best in Pittsburgh...25 minutes away. Most of us live here and commute 30-45 minutes to Pittsburgh...it's worth it trust me. One look at Marland Heights in Weirton...you'll fall in love with it. WE DID!! Everyone walks for exercise every nice night til like 11:00pm or so, us included. People you don't know will not hesitate to talk and be friendly to you. It truly is Almost Heaven. There are some awesome houses for sale and reasonably priced too. The view from up here at the Veterans Bridge on US rte.22, and the valley below...amazing!! Plus you can be in 3 states in like 5 minutes...great for your out of town visitors, fun too. Ohio border at the end of my street( the river), yet PA is 4 miles away. All this, and you have the Steelers, Pirates, and ever popular Penguins 45 minutes or so away downtown. You would only be 45 minutes from PGH, not quite 2 hours or so from Columbus and Cleveland, OH. You also get DC, Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Indianapolis all a short 5 or 6 hr weekend trip away. Crime is not too bad in Weirton...sure you have drugs like any city, but for the most part people up here anyway really respect you. Visit: Welcome to Top Of WV.Com or ask me if you have any other questions. Take care!!

Default Weirton...A great place to call home!!

Weirton is much safer and nicer...West Virginians are much nicer...Yes i am biased but my wife and I just moved to Weirton, LOVE IT!! Check out the Marland Heights area of Weirton where we live. Best place I've ever lived. You can go for a walk at 11 pm if you want, and feel safe up here. Great view of the valley too. Steubenville has nice parts but stay the hell out of downtown at night unless your doors are locked. Weirton is where my wife and I plan on staying til we croak Visit: Welcome to Top Of WV.Com or ask me if you have questions

Dave thanks for the information. Are there any taxes/fees associated with living in Weirton and working in Steubenville or outside WV?

Default Weirton?

I am going to be brief, but have a question. If I had the opportunity to move to Weirton for a job that paid well, would it:

a. Be a good place to raise a family?
b. Be safe?
c. Have stuff for us to do as a family? (If so, what?)
d. Are the SERIOUS plans to actually renovate the city? I see nothing but things being closed down and it being gloomy. Is there actually a plan in place to turn it around and if so, how soon?

Any other thoughts on the area are appreciated. I am very torn. Thank you.

I can't believe that you'd notice a big difference in life between living in Weirton vice Stuebenville. Both are cities that have historically been tied to the river commerce and steel industries. Both are ethnically diverse cities, and those ethnicities are celebrated in various festivals. My take is that both would be a good place to raise your family, but neither are the place to get rich or live large.

I don't know anything about Ohio personal income taxes, but WV personal income tax is a percentage of your gross income. Fill out the single page resident income tax form, no specific deductions apply and send it in - it's pretty straightforward. I think that I remember reading that WV income tax is higher than both Ohio or PA income taxes.

I have family in the Weirton area, and I can't recall any conversation involving renovations or rehabs of the downtown area.

Default Flooding

Does it flood in Weirton ? I know it's on the Ohio. I wouldn't want to have to endure a flood.

Some areas flood but not usually from the Ohio River. The locks and dam system keeps the river in check for the most part. Flooding typically occurs from streams and creeks. Part of the downtown area as well as along Kings Creek are prone to flooding.
