Default The Northern Panhandle

I am new to this site and just wanted to let everyone who is interested in our state that the northern panhandle of WV is a great place to live. I live in Marshall County, Moundsville, to be exact and I am 12 miles south of Wheeling. Wheeling is growing for a change and it is nice to see that. Cabela's came here a few years ago, and now the entire area around their store is growing by leaps and bounds. Lots of new stores are soon to be opening and it is reported that an amusement park will be built across the Interstate highway from Cabela's. I have lived here most of my life and am now a widow and have put my house on the market, but plan on staying in the area. We raised our children here, and now grandchildren are growing up here. The school system in Marshall County is great, neighbors are not into your business, but are there if you need them, people are friendly and courteous and housing is plentiful in any price range. Crime in Moundsville is practically non-existant and most of us still are Block Parents. (Selling my house because I don't need that much house for one person). There is a lot to do in our area, Oglebay Park is beautiful, lots of golf courses, lots of shopping, churchs are warm and friendly, there is a Casino in Wheeling, we are close to Pittsburgh, Pa., Columbus Ohio, and lots of fun and neat places within a one-day drive. The weather is for the most part, mild and pleasant year round. Yes, it gets very cold and snowy, and very hot and humid, but not for long. Considering other parts of our beautiful United States, we are very lucky when it comes to weather. I hope that I have shed some light on my wonderful part of Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. P.S. Lots of hunting, fishing, and beautiful peaceful river to enjoy.

I'm glad to hear Wheeling is doing well. I never spent any time around there even though I was just about an hour away (Marietta, OH, across the river from Parkersburg). We did like to head to Moundsville for Halloween with friends, though. What's the job market like up that way these days?

Job market seems to be improving, especially with all the Wal-Marts, Lowes stores and all the new businesses going in around Cabela's. Moundsville has a new Gypsum plant in operation now right across Rt. 2 from the Mitchell Plant. Yes, a LOT of people like to come to Mdsv. at Halloween time. They do it up right at the old prison.

Hello, My husband, his father and I both moved to Weirton Wva last October. We absolutely love Wva. We are now looking to move by next October before our least is up on November 1st.

We are looking for a place to call country. But do not want to move too far from Pgh at all either. My mother in law is buried in Pgh Pa.

Are they actually going to build an amusement park down there. I love fun parks. I used to work at Kennywood and that is my childhood park growing up.

Default Hi Angel

Got your message and I really don't know of too many places now that are for sale that are in a country-like area. But I certainly will keep my eyes open for someplace that might fit your decription. By the way, I had a cousin named Bobby Lewis that lived in Clairton years ago. He worked for US Steel and his dad (who was my dad's brother) was Bryant or Bryan Lewis. Would you know of them by the way? Bobby would be about 72 years old now. It would be neat if you knew of him. Have a good nite and will talk to you soon. WV gram

I don't know if my father in law knows them or not. I will have to ask him.

His name is William Lewis, he goes by Don, He has 8 siblings. Harold, Eugene, RuthAnn, Ruth, Marilyn, I forget the other ones names right now at the mo.

Now one person replied to my thread that I made, one place is swearingen hill which is just north of Weirton and wylie ridge.

If you're going to make the trip up to see the prison in Moundsville then you may want to hop across the border and see the one in Mansfield, OH (Shawshank). It shouldn't be too far out of the way and you could make a weekend out of it.
