The Appalachian Mountain Trail is located from Springer Mountain (Northern Georgia )to Mount Katahdin ( central Maine ),(2,015 miles long). All along this mountain region is what we call the last frontier in America. Born in the Appalachian Mountains, I gained a sense of rich heritage from my environment. I understand the relationship to the environment and appreciate how fragile and priceless it is. In my memories, I hear the heart lifting sound of a songbird offering its’ pure melodically song. I realized how bless I was to be born into a large family of this region. My memories, life experiences and talents have inspired me with the need to spread some knowledge of my heritage to the youth of today and anyone who will listen. I wish to create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime for all I meet in this lifetime. I went to college for awhile trying to write and here is a thought which describes the way I feel about the mountains. Crossing a wooden foot bridge made of logs, I think of the waterfall back home. This is my goal. I have my tent, bedroll, and food for a week. I have packed light for the three mile walk up the mountain. It will be a four hour walk. I see the beauty of the forest. As I walk I can almost hear the rhapsody of the forest coming to life. I wonder what the bear and snake would say if they could talk. Do they see me as an intruder or as one of God's children coming home for a resurrection of the soul? I hear the birds singing, the water running, and see the wind blowing the trees. I see the wild azalea, with her bright orange blossoms dancing in the wind like ribbons in the trees. I see trillium blooms as white as pearls encircling the mountain. The Blooms are dressed in their Sunday best. They have a bouquet of violets in colors of purple and yellow. The May apple peeps out from her lush green bonnet. Around the old stump I see ghostly white Indian pipes. Maybe the ghostly Indians kept the blood root to paint their faces red in times of war, but now she looks like a snow-white star from heaven. I see a pretty pink lady's slipper standing beautiful waiting for her dance partner. Perhaps it will be the jack-in-the-pulpit standing straight and tall with his hat covering his hair of tarnished red. In the distance, the wild rose sends her sweet fragrance on the wind. The wild honeysuckle is starting to climb the trees. At last I have reached my goal. The waterfall flows from one large rock, and cascades down the rocks, like the hair of an angel, flowing down over her shoulders after the ribbon has been untied. It's as if God stooped down and hollowed out a bowl. Then cleared a spot to get a drink of cool mountain water from the waterfall. I climb down the steep rock hill, taking care to avoid the snakes sunning themselves on the warm rocks. Beneath the water, I see rocks of all shapes and sizes. A small flat rock makes an excellent skipping stone. It's fun to watch it dance on the water. I see a rainbow trout scurry under a large rock. A ledge of stone runs along the bottom of the waterfall from the bank to a spot where the water comes cascading down. I can sit under the falling water and watch the animals go by. Or I can take three steps up and dive into the water. The current will take me in a complete circle around the bowl and back to the ledge. At night when the moon is out, the forest turns into a fairyland of lights. The moonlight dances as light reflects on the water and wet rocks of the creek. The lighting bugs play a game of hide and seek with their lights blinking. While I am here I know that God has made this beauty to unite me with nature, and to drink in all its beauty with love. I think God has kissed the earth with love and that love resurrects our souls. This is the location of the spot I go to be alone. As a child I spent many hours in the forest or woods as we hill people call it. My oldest sister told me when I was young I was always in the woods when she needed to find me.I still feel that there are paths to walk and things to learn there.Have you layed on a green carpet of moss and dreamed of far away places like the ocean or palm trees? I have been reaching for the circle of life and still going. Thank you GOD for a incredible journey
