Weston (pop. 4,110) is the seat of Lewis County (16,372) and is located in north-central West Virginia along I-79 about 130 miles south of Pittsburgh and 100 miles northeast of Charleston WV. Weston has an urban cluster population of 5,077. The city is situated in the rugged Allegheny Plateau.
Weston was founded in 1818. Confederate general Stonewall Jackson's boyhood home is a few miles north of town.
wha!? i wasn't expecting this! It's the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum... built from 1858-1881. It closed in 1994, but for the past few years has offered tours. It is one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the U.S. In 1999, the interior of the building was severely damaged by people playing paintball inside.
Thank you, so much for sharing your photos! It's a real eye-opener to see a town ..the good parts and the "not so good". A "road-trip" is definitely in order!
Really nice to visit in Weston is the WV Museum of American Glass. WV Museum of American Glass
Glass factories all over the US donated samples and collectors including Frank Fenton parted with prize objects so that the collection is quite large and represenative.
Don't think you have a picture of it:
The figure in the center window is "Blinko Man".
A nice day trip includes:
Ron Hinkle Glass www.ronhinkle.com/
and Chip Turner at Appalachian Glass Appalachian Glass Products & Services LLC.
Chip is close to the highway into town from I-79.
(Check websites for all 3 for hours open to the public and special events. You may want to call and confirm if you will be traveling a distance.)
I had to smile when I read the writer's question "does it snow much in Weston?". From my memories of old, one word~ YES!!! I'm a native Pennsylvanian, but lived in the state of W.Va for several years in the 70's. I had family in Weston and visited frequently. Boy, did it ever snow! Of course, everything's changed tremendously now, so i'd love to hear someone with much more current info. Thank you though, for the pictures...it was wonderful to see again!
