Hey all,

I am getting married in NC in January. Many of our guests are having to come from Indiana to get there. They will drive through on Route 64 E.

What are the driving conditions like this time of year? Do you think there will be a problem driving through the mountains? What is the snowfall typically like? Do they clear the roads quickly?

Thank you! They are trying to figure out travel plans

My hubby is otr...He drives 64 often........I have to say our DOT is very much on top of the roads thru our winters..Coming from a state with no snow i was highly impressed how quick the roads get cleared and i always seen dot around when it was heavy..We even have extra road courtesy vehicles present in the winter season..I go to NC often during the winter months...

Best of luck to you on the wedding..

hi..just another thought..check out 'farmer's almanac' on the sections your family and friends will be coming thru..it's not a l00% but it's pretty good..also always have a winter safety kit in the vehicle u never know when u mite need it..that's for any area with snow and or ice.........like extra clothes, water etc.. slow down always when coming toward toll boths..slick with grease and possible ice/wet stuff.. always try to prepare for the worst....hope this helps...

Pfui.

Unless they're in the middle of a heavy (6-8"+ expected) snowstorm, there shouldn't be any problems that common sense can't handle. If it's really coming down, reduce speed, accelerate and brake gradually, be patient.

Watch the weather forecasts, have them plan on leaving a day early if necessary.

Or.... you could always re-schedule the wedding for June.

I think state roads does a fine job clearing snow. The problem is that it can be a sunny day and you go over a mountain like Flat Top or East River Mtn. here in the south and get hit with a localized snowstorm that can dump 2 inches in ten minutes and no one can predict it or clear it before there are multiple accidents.

We joke about these areas having their own climate zones.

Snow is going to be a risk in winter and mountains are no fun to drive over in the snow.
