I'm interested in moving to an area (someday--maybe 5 yrs from now) where the cost of living is low and where you can buy real estate (house with land) fairly cheaply. Are there places like that left in WV?
Close your eyes, then throw a dart at a map of West Virginia. Unless you happen to hit Berkeley or Jefferson counties in the Eastern Panhandle, or by some wild chance happen to hit right in the middle of one of the few larger cities (Huntington, Charleston, Morgantown, maybe Beckley), the dart will have hit a part of West Virginia with reasonably priced land and housing.
As an example, about three years ago, we bought 4 acres of land in Pocahontas County for $20K. Admittedly, that's a pretty rural county, and prices will be higher closer to the cities, but I don't think by much.
I have lived in WV most of my life but have traveled extensively from sea to shining sea. If you are looking for a rural area think about Lincoln County. Housing is inexpensive. Rent is in the $300-$400 a month range. People are friendly. Schools need teachers. There are never traffic jams. You can commute to the big cities in about 30 to 40 minutes with little traffic. Taxes are low. This would also be a great place to retire. Crime rate is low. Don't let the main street of Hamlin fool you. There is always something going on. You can volunteer in various activites or not. The choice is yours. Scenery is beautiful. If a small house and a little garden are what you want you just might like it here. Maybe you can start your own business in the downtown. This is definitely the "get away from it all" community. No one comes here unless they have a purpose. Think I'll hit the hammock.
Elkins is one of the cheapest places to live in the state based on paying taxes.. Check it out. Elkins is decently rural, with full fledged rural within 5-10 minutes. ha ha
