The big story in West Virginia? Mining. It was responsible for 3.89 percentage points of the 4.5 percent growth, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said.
"West Virginia was driven by some strong growth in the mining sector," said Cliff Woodward, an economist with the bureau. "It's almost the entire growth rate."
...
Rigby said that the drilling activity has led to an impact on everything from apartment rentals to restaurants and gas stations as well as other business in the northern Panhandle, which includes the region surrounding Wheeling and Moundsville.

I thought the current administration was doing everything it could to derail the mining industry in WV?
Weird.

Coal is no longer king. Gas is.
Also, they limited strip mining which is very profitable for the bottom line of the company but not for the actual workers or wv economy.
Finally, wv has not really been part of the housing/finance/credit bubble so when they burst wv was not effected.
Wv has the opportunity to really develop and prosper, but I am afraid corruption, apathy, ignorance, and incompetent state government will allow all the wealth to flow out of state instead of benefitting wv.

Ah OK. That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.
I'm not a West Virginian, but it rubs me the wrong way to see such a beautiful state with all of the resources you guys have being pillaged by a wide variety of people. At least the state is growing economically - that's more than can be said for some states.

I saw it, but Gas is driving the wealth.
The shale is for long term prosperity. Coal comes and goes, and is a path to failure.

While the Obama administration and the EPA may be taking a harder look at mountain top removal mining permits, a quick look at coal mining employment in West Virginia reveals that since Obama took office in the winter of 2009 coal mining employment has grown by over 1,500 jobs or by 7.4%. If we measure from the end of the national recession in June 2009 (or the 2nd Quarter of 2009) to the third-quarter of 2011 (the latest available data), employment in the coal mining industry has grown by 3,100. For comparison, total employment in West Virginia has only grown by 2.9% over this period.

Despite the politicians, WV's economy has been one of the bright spots in the nation. According to this USAToday article, per capita Gross Domestic Product in West Virginia has grown by 5.2% since 2007, ranking it 4th in the nation (behind N. Dakota, Oregon, and Louisiana).

I've been preaching this over and over... It falls on deaf ears and their immediate reaction/response is, is that I'm young and ignorant. They have an excuse for everything... If I was older it would be that I'm senial lol They just can't wrap their heads around advanced thought and possibly imagine that they might be wrong.
