Gee, I hate to break up a good argument, but let's see what the data says. I found a web page at wv.gov that shows population by county. All comparisons below are between the April 1, 2000 Census value and the July 1, 2005 estimated value.

Counties that grew by more than 1,000: Berkeley, Jefferson, Putnam, Monongalia, Hampshire, Morgan.

Counties that grew by 500-999: Preston, Summers, Hardy, Greenbrier.

What if we compare percentage increase instead of absolute numbers:

Counties that grew by 5% or more: Berkeley, Jefferson, Hampshire, Morgan, Summers, Putnam.

Counties that grew by 2-5%: Hardy, Grant, Monongalia, Preston.

Largest Population Decrease: Kanawha (-6,514)
Largest Percentage Decrease: McDowell (-11.1%)

Total State Population Change, 2000-2005: +8,512 (0.47%)

Good info snorpus as always...Yes but my main arguement is that southern wv is growing and alot of interest has been coming to the area here of late..Just take a look like...Princeton is growing...Beckley very much so..Lewisburg named one of the top 10 small towns in america...Summers county is the middle of those three with recreation of 2 rivers and a lake and a ski resort.Monroe County is a perfect place if your wanting acreage maybe a few animals but close to bigger things when needed...Then Greenbrier County with the Greenbrier Resort and their new golf course that the PGA will began using in 2011 along with all the recreation of outdoors abundnant in Greenbrier County..Snowshoe Resort is one of the most popular resorts on the east coast..My point also is while I disagree with GottaHerdon I agree as well...The panhandle is growing fast and probably faster as the info provided shows..but southern wv is attracting different people that want further from the rat race and the pure assumption of exploring the state and finding your great property that hasnt been found before is exciting to many and has a feel of satisfaction. Another point of view is that companies see southern west virginia as less expensive to get in and running that the northern so breweries as an example and other types are wanting to set up shop because even though in the end they may pay higher when everyone catches up but now they would not have to...Then finally while you have your destination of serenity and happiness your 2 hours from Roanoke,va...3 from charlotte and 6hrs from myrtle beach...I'm pretty much just glad to see all areas of the state getting this interest and hopefully it will alot more in the future...Also I was not wanting to argue because if someone is for anything in west virginia I am for them.

Smile Moving to Marlinton

As a former resident of Marlinton & also northern Pocahontas County I can tell you it is a lovely place to live. Very little crime, good schools, a Foodland grocery store & also in town a Fas Chek grocery store. The northern end has Trents store in Arbovale & Bartow & in Durbin you will find Kinders market. While living in Arbovale I found I could find most everything I needed at Trents store including hardware & sm plumbing items. In the spring they get a wonderful greenhouse set up & sell many beautiful plants: flowers & gardening both. Can't beat Trents! I sure did miss them when we moved to Marlinton.
Marlinton on the other hand has a Rite Aid drug store, $ General & Family $, & several restaurants. There are areas of Marlinton that don't flood such as up on Hamilton Hill where our house is still for sale. It is a 3 bdrm. 2&1/2 bath red brick ranch with tons of storage space inside & a big 16X20 shed in the backyard. If you might be interested in this house, please call us at: 352-259-0258. Call in the afternoon & ask for Linda. We have moved to FL to a retirement community.
Good luck in your search.

snorpus: The population increase of 1,000 and over should be adjusted somewhat...I know WVU alone has added over 5,000 to the student body in the past 24 months. This is only one indicator item of the Mon County population growth...
The data critera must be old and it is certainly out of place and too slow.

Mon County and Morgantown cries for new roads are a reflection of this horrendous growth...When factions such as business and government must use old data or data that is not a true reflection of current information it loses..

Our legislature spent (WASTED) this entire session on teacher bailout...just like last year...and it was secondary education bailout not higher ed...A study group could do this and free up the legislature for development and growth project consideration...
Wv is growing in every direction (thew exception being the southern most part of the state)...I would hope someone somewhere could see it...perhaps, we need to hire a good business admistrator to run the state...like a city manager, and not give that responsibility to an elected official...

Well, next year is only 365 days away...can't wait for the re-run of the same old same old juggling act.

DK, those are census figures... most college students are counted at "home" (where their parents live), not their college address. For better or worse, that's why the growth in WVU enrollment won't show up in those statistics.
