Dk, I know you are right. I know people who tell me I'm being naive are right.
Remember the scene in Apocalypse Now where Robert Duvall wants to go surfing and is standing on the beach with the shells hitting all around him while everyone is taking cover? Well, I guess I'm like that.
I've been told to never pick so and so up if they're hitch hiking because "they will cut your throat for a dollar." Hasn't stopped me yet.
I'm strong and I'm fast and I'm agile and if anyone ever points a gun at me, they better shoot fast or they'll have it shoved down their throat. Not bragging. Fact.
And I might live or die with this attitude but I refuse to live in fear.

Never to late for martial arts...a few moves just to be on the safe side. Any kook can be reduced to zero with a sharp slap to the throat...I would expect Princeton to have a little DoJo somewhere...Most of the kooks get off with knives...intimidation thing..phallic.
Our guy left the gun against the house...brought the knife in with him...Hitch-hikers? I pick them up too...but many are ex-cons! Not like the old days...

From all that I've read, a black bear will only follow through an attack if it intends to kill you. The vast majority of the time they run like hell from you but there are those bears with cubs, injured, hungry or just nasty and they on very rare occasions do attack. Fight using anything available and try to get the nose and/or eyes. Bears are very powerful and you need to get lucky but if you put up enough of a fight it may leave. If it's chewing on you, what do you have to lose by fighting? It's going to kill you if it can so I don't think I could just lay there. Carry a large can of pepper spray made for bears and only if you know how to use it and it's legal to posess where you're hiking, a firearm. 12 gauge shotgun is best.

An old hunter in Hardy County told me that a 12 guage WAS best. He had killed three bear that way and said he hated it. It was a matter of life and death. He said each bear stood as he came near...his first shot was to blind the bear, then he shot at the throat...emptying the gun and hoping enough shot would do the trick. That great old hunter died of old age years ago....that's my story of the 3 bears.

There's a nice article about some recent "bear visits" in the Mountain Times section of this week's Pocahontas Times. Link, then scroll down.
Some choice quotes:
..."as he went to shut the window he looked out to see a sow and four cubs eating the dog food on the porch,"
..."The next day, the bears returned and, finding no windows open, they tore the screens off several windows and the French doors."
..."The bacon was heated, as bears can smell bacon for up to seven miles."
..."According to some reports, a bloodhound has a sense of smell 300 times that of a human. A bear's sense of smell is 50 times that of a bloodhound. Be careful what you put out there. "
..."They even pulled out a piece of baseboard on the porch, complete with the 12 nails that held it. "
