Default What is Weirton WV like

My husband, his dad and I are trying to move away from Pa but close to pa.

We would like to live at the border of Ohio like Steubenville or Weirton.

What I want to know what the cost of rent is like, taxes, is it like a country farm type living not congested like a city.

Also where can I go to search for a house for rent in Weirton as well.

I don't know in any modern sense. Weirton is an old steel mill town. Think it finally gave up the ghost and all the mills are shut down. Kind of a grimy place where all the houses are the same color from the dust / pollution common to most of those mill towns. The outlying areas probably can get fairly rural pretty quick, like most of that region.

Both Weirton and Steubenville have tried to morph into bedroom towns for folks that commute / work in PA. The lure is the cheap housing and cost of living. Been going on for some time now. I know more about Steubenville than Weirton.

Both are places to find cheap rent. House prices are low too if buying. Lots of foreclosed houses in Steubenville. It was one of the places I looked to rent when I moved back to Ohio, if it came to that on a temporary basis. One of the few where all the rentals didn't have "No Pets" signs up in bold letters. You probably can get rentals in the $300 a month range. Steubenville apparently still has some nice areas to live. Houses can be had in the $20K range if buying, maybe even cheaper if you bargain hard. Look to be fairly decent, just few good jobs available local, hence why most folks commute elsewhere.

The negatives may be shopping and grocery stores might be difficult to find in that general area. Jefferson County, OH has been hit hard and many businesses of all types closed. My sister says it really changed, even the malls closed down. Became a bit of a ghost town. Many folks from those general areas must go to Calcutta for most of the nearest good shopping.

If you want to stay close to the PA border, might want to consider towns like Lisbon or Salem in Ohio. Should be able to get rents in the same range, usually you do get more restrictions.

Even the towns of Wellsville or East Liverpool might be considered. Used to be in pretty bad shape but seem to be on the rebound. Questions about the quality of living, crime???? Again not much there in either for shopping but you would cut the driving mileage into PA.

I tend to be more negative about living in W.VA than Ohio. Lot more hassles and hoops to jump thru. They like to get their money the old fashion way by using lots of gimmicks, plus they have full car inspections. One of my neighbor's kids is now working in W.VA but sort of still living at home. They demand he become a W.VA. resident and put the squeeze on him, just for being employed in W.VA.

You can web search and attempt to find the newspapers for both Steubenville and Weiron. Usually you can read the want ads on line. Should be relatively easy to find.

I am looking into wintersville too. I live in Florida. Let me know what you come up with. Is there a lot of pollution in Wintersville, like I'm reading about in Weirton? I spoke to someone in the mayors office and she sounded very nice. What are the rent/homes going for in Wintersville? Does anyone know anyone who works for Comcast Cable in Wintersville? My husband works for that company in Florida. They are hiring in Wintersville and I wanted to get an idea of how much they pay in Ohio as compared to Florida, but he doesn't want to ask his company (here in florida) because they'd know he's thinking of leaving. If there are any Comcastians out there, please enlighten me on what it's like working for Comcast up there in Ohio? or PA or any surrounding areas. Thanks, Angela

I am currently looking to move to the area at the end of this year for work. I have looked at Weirton and Steubenville / Wintersville. I am with angellewis about being close to Rt 22. I am from Ohio & prefer living there. Along Sunset Blvd there are at least a few places to go. I am having a lot of trouble right now finding a place to rent that allows pets. I have checked with many of the apartment complexes in the area & it is really hard to find houses for rent. I also want to find a decent gym in the area. Calcutta would probably be a good area for most to consider, but it is a dry town & there are no bars.

Feel like I am playing matchmaker - did you see the new reply to the post titled "Need Weirton rental home - Dec 08".

Wow, I didn't know there were still dry towns. Is Calcutta in WV or Ohio?

Best of luck with your house hunting.

Weirton is a mill town. Not bad, there is a small lubes refinery up the road a few miles as well.

PPG - the only "Calcutta, OH" that i'm familiar with is located slightly west of East Liverpool, which is quite a way from Rt 22. or is there another town by the same name around Steubenville?

We lived in Weirton for two months, and decided it was not for us. It seemed like the only thing there was strip clubs. I was also worried about the schools due to the decline of the rest of the city. There were grocery stores, but that's it. We had to go to Steubenville for taco bell, and we went to Robinson township to shop. There was a small mall in Steubenville, but it didn't have the stores we like. It was just way to country for us. We went there for the cheap housing, but the cons were just to great. Also there were NO JOBS!!!!!!! Plan on driving to PA or Ohio if you work.
