Default schools

We may be relocating to the Huntington area. Looking specificly at Barboursville. I was wondering about the schools and how they are set up. Are they local city districts or by county? I will have a 9th and 5th grader.

All of West Virginia uses the "county-unit" system. There is one school district, BOE, etc., per county. The specific schools your children would attend would be determined by where your house is, of course.

The school system in the area is run by a county board of education but the districts are set up on a city/town basis to determine which school you go to. Your 5th grader will go to the Village of Barboursville Elementary (a newly built school) and your 9th grader will go to Cabell Midland (a fairly new high school that is about 13 years old). Both are very nice facilities and most people are pleased with the schools and teachers. They are also currently building a new Barboursville Middle school so your youngest will be able to go through that new facility. I went through the Barboursville/Midland school system and was pleased with the education I received. I graduated in 1998 though so I'm sure things have changed in terms of teachers and curriculum. Hope this answered your question and let me know if you have any other questions about the schools or the area in general.
