I have the oppurtunity to go to Graduate school part-time for my Masters Degree. My employer will be paying and WVUs program is the most conveniant for me. I just have a few questions:

Is the University of West Virginia a good school? Does it have a good reputation outside of the state (Im not from West Virginia). If I loose my current job would a grad degree from WVU be an assett in landing a new job. Any advice from alumni would be especially appreciated.

Thanks!

Advice Number 1: Work on your spelling and grammar. In the six sentences of your posting, you had at least three misspellings and two grammatical errors. Many professors (myself included) return papers ungraded if they contain too many errors.

Advice Number 2: There is no such thing as the University of West Virginia.

Advice Number 3: You didn't indicate what field of study you're investigating. Like all Universities, some programs are stronger than others. In my opinion (and you'll certainly get a variety of opinions here), WVU is strongest in engineering and science, the health sciences, and in forestry/agriculture.

Advice Number 4: With the exception of really elite schools, like Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, etc., what matters most to employers is the fact that you earned a particular degree, rather than the institution that you got it from.

Advice Number 5: Given that your employer will be paying for it, it sounds like a very good idea to me.

rather than differing to the opinions of those on message boards, why don't you ask peers in your field of study/work and also consult academic rankings before making such a huge decision.

It is the flagship state school. That carries a good rep anywhere. Also has a wvu grad in the DC area it carries a lot of weight.

My kids tell me it's a better party school than any here in VA.

Thank you all for the info! Snorpus - Sorry about the spelling/grammar errors. I was trying to post the question before my lunch break was over and never ran spell check or proof read it.

I have a few other options. The other program I am thinking about is all classroom training which I prefer (WVU is online/Classroom based). A lot of the upper middle class kids that I graduated High School with went to this other school and I kind of associate it with "snobbery". So I'm hesitant to enroll there.

I'm leaning more towards WVU. Even though I won't be spending much time on campus I like the atmosphere and the general vibe. It feels more down to Earth. My degree will be in the sciences.

As others have posted, it's up to you. As with any public school, it has it's strengths & weaknesses, and you would be better served by communicating w/others in your field - it is important to note that basing a school decision on other's "impressions" is extraordinarily foolish (and doing so is a key part in today's Higher Ed bubble).
Best of luck!

Brilliant observation there, as always. Have they attended every school in VA?

They've partied at most of them and have friends there. One went to JMU which is the premier VA party school and says WVU has them beat.

Well it is official. We should put that on wikipedia. Any other great insights your son and his friends have?
