As a former resident of Charleston now living in the DC area I can assure you that surviving on $26,000 is definitely possible. You won't exactly be living in South Hills, the "rich" area of Charleston, but you can DEFINITELY find apartments on the East End, West Side or even certain parts of Kanawha City in your monthly price range. If you wanted to live outside of town some places to look into would be Dunbar, South Charleston, and Cross Lanes. Some people might tell you the crime is out of control on the East End but that is just because they haven't lived in a major city, although a crime element does exist you won't have to worry about it as long as you aren't involved in the drug trade. As far as petty crime, that can happen in any neighborhood.
