Meetin' people you didn't know yet.....the leaves on Laurel Mountain were spectaular...when the sun shone through the rain clouds they almost hurt your eyes...
It took an hour to drive the curvy road of Rt 50 to get to Cool Springs....at nine-thirty only two parking spaces were vacant...gallon jugs of fresh squeezed cider were chilling outside on the apple crates...people were pouring over those Romney treasures as we made our way to a booth for breakfast. Eggs, sausage, potatoes from the Aurora farm...first one on the right at the top of Cheat mountain...toast and a short stack of 'buckwheats' with maple syrup....this is what West Virginia food is all about.
Those ladies who have worked their entire lives at that mountain oasis have given a gift of service to every passerby in need of sustinance.
As a boy, I remember the cool mountain spring where we would fill a jug...dad would check the radiator and oil stick of our Ford and get $2.00 in gasoline from Harlan as we traveled on to Capon river or Moorefield...he was a young man then..fresh from the war and trying to eek out a living with almost nothing.
The store was just a log cabin then...over the years and a lifetime...it has beome a historical fixture and a place of rest, recreation and refreshment to all who would stop.
Harlan has never sold any alcoholic brews...I didn't realize this until today. He has built a multi-million dollar enterprise with just sweat and a great personality...
He was drawing a crowd as he was topping off those jugs of cider..."We just made it yesterday...it's fresh," he said as I took a few jugs to the car.
"You're going to be busy today," I replied. "I'll come back in a few weeks...when things are not so hectic, " I replied.
Harlan just smiled..."See you then".

Stonewall Jackson Lake. Some big lunker bass in there, even though the locals act like they wish the catch and release was lifted. They just don't know what they've got.

When the EER'S win a ball game that's a squeaker....like Louisville, last night. A spectaular display of discipline, purpose and dominate will. What those kids learn on that football field will give them an edge to succeed on the 'playing field' of life. Band sounded great too!
