Being safe in West Virginia? It goes back to the days of the indian raids...and the 'boogeyman'...just part of the culture. 'If you go outside the 'boogeyman will get ya'
This is a new West Virginia, I'm talkin' about and I'm here to Boogie! |

Big-Al I'm not angry I just like to let people know what they are getting into by coming here. Don't get me wrong the mountains are beautiful and upstate there is plenty to see and do. I am glad that you realized about what I was saying about the job front here. Most of the better jobs are leaving, and unless you want to work in fast food or as a housekeeper you better have that degree in pocket. Yes I am going to move to Iowa just as soon as winter is over. Their job front has plenty to choose from, wonderful schools, and the cost of living is a lot cheaper than here. I just need a new start and a place to call home, and thus far I can't say that West Virginia will ever be home.

I'm staying in West Virginia for my college education. I plan on moving out of the state after graduation...I'm currently a senior.
I think leaving after college is a growing trend in WV. |

I think you should leave...and travel as far and wide as you can...Perhaps you will return someday with all the wisdom in the world...We need that here.
Most of the gripers wish they could have stayed here...and our sorry politicians really are to blame...they didn't start any public education program until the 1880's...sided with the business interests and carpet baggers at every turn...Business and our legislature stiffeled opportunity for our people. Our people were a worthless, disposable commodity to the coal mines and timber companies... We can educate or vegatate. We still have that choice. The trend you are talking about began in the 1930's...when people beame so desperate to survive that they had to move. It followed again in 1959, 1970 and 1985. All depression years for the West Virginia economy. there IS a chance to turn this monster around...it began with Gaston Caperton and is being carried on with Joseph Manchin... I'm not leaving until I see if he is going to help us or gut us...time will tell shortly... good luck to you in your future, I sure that wherever you go, you will succeed admirably... |

But... Iowa? lol I've never been a fan of cornfields.. ha ha If I leave it will be somewhere more socially accepting.. Like somewhere in New England, perhaps New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, etc. I know everyone is entitled to be who they want to be, but these die hard conservative, republican, right wing people (Not saying that everyone in WV is like this, actually WV seems moderatly liberal IMO) but they get on my nerves, so I think if I move it will be somewhere more liberal, accepting, etc.

I think the PROMISE Scholarship was one of the best policies implemented in this state, but there is a flaw. The taxpayers are paying for these kids an education (which is fantastic) but due to terrible policy and economy we lose the kids we paid have educated to other states. I may be one of those shortly. Thanks for the well wishes! |

I gotta tell you, this is kinda funny reading. I was born in Parkersburgh and I grew up in Preston County. I now live in Tampa, FL. I would give my right arm to be able to raise my children in WV instead of here in FL. The grass is always greener on the other side, everyone who is complaining about life in WV needs to realize that. Move away, spread your wings, and I bet you can't wait to go back home. People here are rude and everyday is a sunday drive thanks to all the retirees. It is always hot and the hurricanes suck. It is expensive to live here. I cannot let my children go into the yard and play because I have 10 sexual offenders and 1 prediator within a mile of my house, and I live in a nice neighborhood!
So, take the little negatives in stride, move if you want, but WV will always be home! |
