My partner and I are considering moving to Huntington. Are there any churches that would accept us without the "yeah buts". We currently go to the United Church of Christ. Their motto "No matter who you are,or where you are on life's Journey, you are welcome here." Not Church of Christ, too fundimental. We very much need to go to church,God made us the way we are. Please respond kindly.

There is a church in Huntington that accepts gays openly. They even have a gay pastor. I cannot remember the name of it, but we had the pastor come and speak on the campus of Marshall for pride weak last year about gays and religion. I'm personally not religious, so I didn't really take in a whole lot from the speech, but I will ask some of my counterparts which church it was and get back to you on that!
I consider Huntington the gayest city in West Virginia by the way, and we're proud of it! ![]() |

Gays in church? Isn't that like saying, "I want to be a snowman in hell."?
If you want to be gay go for it, but what church is going to accept that? I'm not religious either, but I've been to church and they barely even accept straight people, much less gays. FYI, Riverfront Park and Rotary Park are gay hangouts. I didn't know this until I was hit on by other men. Was the nastiest thing I've ever experienced. Can't even go to the park in peace. Oh well, now I'm out of there so it's all over. |

I've been to the Riverfront Park and Rotary Park several times and never experienced anything like what you stated above. And your comments were a little uncalled for by the way. mtnwannabe, I wish I could give you an answer to your question but I'm not really familiar with what you are looking for. My advice would be to look for a church in the same family as the one you are currently in or wait and see if GHO can give you an answer. I remember reading about a church like he was talking about and it seems like it was in the Beverly Hills area of Huntington but I'm not sure. You might even try your luck with google. |

Rotary is notorious for gays. If you didn't know that then you just don't know Huntington very well at all. Comments uncalled for? I speak truth. Whether it's pleasant or not (usually it isn't) I speak it anyway. |

I also agree that your comments were out of line. It's fine to want to speak the truth, but at least be kind about it and have some class. This forum should be used to showcase WV and promote what a great place it is to live. We don't want potential residents to think that West Virginians are mean-spirited and don't accept others. We want people to feel comfortable and welcomed here. |

Yeah, feel comfortable and welcomed in the #50 economy in the US.
I'd say if you're lucky enough to even find a job that pays anything just thank God for that, even if there isn't a church to go to. Really, I've never heard of a gay church. I thought it was against religions to be gay. All the churches I ever went to were bad enough, talking about how you couldn't lust, and we're talking opposite sex here. "If you look at a hot chick and think she's hot, you're going to hell." I guess I'll have a lot of company. |

I never said those things didn't happen to you. I was merely saying that I've lived here my whole life and heard things such as what you said above but on all of my numerous visits to both parks, I've never had that experience nor have I actually witnessed it happening. Even if it did happen to you, there's a much more tasteful way to say it than the way you did. This isn't a smack forum like what you may be used to on certain sports forums. This is a place to share knowledge and experience, good or bad, and a place to do it kindly. No need to belittle others while doing so.
And yes, some churches tend to focus on what people shouldn't do too much and they tend to judge people if they commit certain acts. But the reality of it is, there are lots of things people shouldn't do but people still do it anyway. Some tend to get too caught up on a certain sin when there are things just as bad going on in their church that they never even address. If it were that easy to stay away from sin though, there wouldn't be any. Being Christian isn't about living a pristine, sin free life but it's about trying to. There will be times when all who believe fail to do this, but that doesn't mean you are going straight to hell. The ultimate guide on the way a person should be living is the Bible, without picking and choosing what you want to believe and accepting it all. The only one who can determine if we are doing that is God though, not the local pastor. Not wanting to turn this into a religious debate, I'll stop there. Just wanted to address what was said above. Hopefully Ohio does turn out to be your utopia and you find a little more happiness there. But from what you've said here and on other threads, it sounds like you had your mind made up on WV a long time ago and were determined to have a poor attitude toward most things in this state. Remeber though, there are those here who love this state and won't give up on it so easily even though things may be difficult sometimes. Yes this may be the #50 economy in the US, but moving to Ohio isn't going to fix that. Best of luck to you in your new state though and hopefully things will be better for you there. ![]() |

It already has. I just graduated in May with a civil engineering degree. Had I stayed in WV I'd have made 25% below average for starting out with that degree. Now I make average. Working for 25% less than other people in the same field with the same experience is a slap in the face. Not only that, but my family was a bunch of idiots, bums, and losers. I'm glad to be away from them. WV, like I said, is a beautiful state. I will give it that. Beautiful. The people are what ruin it. Losing attitude, not willing to do things to better the economy. And here's the kicker: THEY KEEP ELECTING ROBERT C. BYRD!!!! "Hey, we're #50, why not keep electing the same people over and over?" Along with Status Quo Joe the governor, and in Lincoln County they buy votes. WV's political system is a joke. The citizens are the ones who get screwed. |
