The who you know is soooo true. But I can understand why - have worked at a couple places where I have seen some real whackos and/or worthless employees hired. It is much more reassuring if someone you know can vouch for the person.

BTW - My hubby is not in your same field but ... hubby was telling me he's been getting all kinds of resumes from out-of-state people looking for work. He hasn't hired any. He isn't a great conversationalist so did not find out "why". My guess is that he sticks to in-state because he can usually make a few calls and find someone who knows the guy. I figure the fact of hiring someone who doesn't even have somewhere to stay here, who probably can't "be there tomorrow", etc. probably also enter into the equation.

So my theory.. which could be completely wrong... you'd have a better chance of getting a job in the state if you were already in the state.

Many of the jobs are union jobs. Those tend to go first to members of the local where they are located. Out of towners can then sign up on the "board" for assignment to contractors upon recommendation of their hometown locals. There are many construction workers from Parkersburg, Charleston, Wheeling, and Pittsburgh working in Morgantown. Some are non-Union and they have more relaxed hiring requirements. Judging from the Help Wanted signs I have seen there lately they still need people.
