My parents live on the original land where the Golden Delicious Apple tree was found in Bomont WV. If anyone has any pictures of it all I would appreciate it if you could send them. Either old or new. Also if any stories you know of how the original tree was started.

Thanks,

Allie

Not sure how much you know but i have heard the stories about the tree. The farm was originally owned by the Mullins family. They were related to my dad. He was from Bomont. I can ask my aunt she may have more info

Hi Allie
I have copies of photos of the original apple tree, taken in about 1920. It shows the apple tree on the hill with a timber frame around it, from the roadside and from the hillside. I was given the copies of the photo by some people who live in Glen , WV, when I visited there in May. I can email you copies if you like. Are your parents the Serls? What is your email address?
regards Glenn

Here's what I found about it in Roger Yepsen's book "Apples":

"Golden Delicious began as a chance seedling, perhaps of Grimes Golden, on a farmer's hillside near Bomont, West Virginia. In 1914 Stark Bought the tree for five thousand dollars, and protected its investment with a tall cage, complete with burglar alarm."

Hi Jason
Did you post the Wikipedia entry from the Charleston newspaper clipping? Does your family live nearby Clay County any longer?
