Default West Virginia State University

Could anyone tell me more about this shool? I saw that they have a very small number of graduate students. I love that but aint sure if the school is a good one.
It is located in Institute (???) 9 miles from Charleston.
Is it possible to find some student jobs in that area?
thank you

I'm not very familiar with the school, so I can't really help you there. I can, however, tell you that you shouldn't have any trouble finding a job. There are plenty of restaurants and retail establishments nearby and it seems like those places are always hiring. Those are great places to work as a student since they offer such flexible schedules. In addition, if you can't find anything in Institute, you could always make the short trip to Chraleston where there would be more opportunities.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm pretty sure that WVSU has no race restrictions. I know several of my high school classmates went there to play baseball and they were all caucasian.

Yeah I definitely agree with the above poster, I am a WVU alum but I had several friends go to WVSU, they were all caucasian. I also took summer classes there one summer when I was still in college and wasn't turned down based on my skin color. State was at one time (very LONG time ago) a black college but either way I don't see what that has to do with anything. As for student jobs every college will have the usual on campus jobs, however if I were a student working there I would probably venture down to Cross Lanes around 5 minutes away and apply for a job at the racetrack, when I was still living in Charleston I knew several friends who worked there as servers and made really good money.

I can attest it is a normal diverse school ( checks out my skin ) I'm white. In more recent history, WV State has had open arms to all races and has many students from other countries as well. A lovely campus. Great professors. Just a great little college in my opinion.

WVSU is a historically black college... emphasis on "historically." When I went there in the late 90s I think (I cannot remember the exact number) it was composed of >80% whites (most of those being commuters). There is not a very large on campus population, but of those who are, the majority is black.

According to Wikipedia, West Virginia State ceased being an all-black school in the wake of Brown v. Bd of Ed (1954), and since the 1960s the student body has been about 90% white.

Graduate degrees are a recent addition. One way to evaluate the quality of a graduate program is to examine the credentials of the faculty. These are listed beginning on page 288 of the 2007-08 University Catalog (part 2).
