Shoot, the only difference I see between Indiana and WV is that Hoosiers like their trailers to have wheels and roll down the road while Mountaineers prefer theirs securely planted on blocks on a piece of ground.

gdude....I read your comment regarding air quality in West Virginia. Did you know that West Virginia is, in fact, ranked #50 of 50 states in all forms of pollution according to a 2007 study by the Sierra Club? Would you be surprised to learn which state is #49 of 50? The good news is you're not #50......the bad news is that you ARE #49!!! Just goes to prove that folks who live in glass houses.....probably should keep their curtains drawn.

Morgantown....cited lately, as one of the recession proof cities...to get this blog back on topic. Our problem up here is not the economy, stupid...its politics and its hacks and lackeys.

WV's two main problems are #1 an outdated Taxation System. Reform needs to happen there to foster growth, with this more college degree required jobs will move in, as long as advancements in better educating the population continue. WV's economy is one of the least diverse in the country. # 2 While coal is always going to play a major role in our economy in the next 100-200 years, it is not going to lift our state out of poverty. We must diversify our economy, bring in bio-technology firms, finance, education, and health firms, exploit our beauty instead of ripping mountains apart. I realize accomplishing these goals as a state and convincing 1.8 million people may take a lot of time. But come on people, its 2008. You all had better vote for me when I run for office ha ha

GHO..coal could do a lot to lift our state out of poverty...if the income was used to educate, not just buy those big dodge pick-ups and a can of skoal...
Massey Energy...and I'm NO fan of Massey Energy, has begun to establish long term contracts with the Chinese to provide coal for their expansion.
While our political hacks turn their backs on this economic, life saving commodity, Massey Energy has found a way to put money into a lot of pockets...some of them the miners of that coal...
We may pay horrendous cost for our own energy because of 'head in the sand laws and the denied use of modern technology...but the Chinese will become US instead...
Instead of the USA continuing to expand economically and having their currency float strongly on the international markets, our coal will help that happen in Asia.
Our economy IS diversified...it ranges from the top of Canada to the bottom of South America. Now that food chain is out of whack, because of Bio-fuel profits...We could use animal dung, garbage and grass for those projects, but it has been a quick fix to use food grains...
EVERY member of Congress has a portfolio of these stocks and is watching their profits soar.
Feeding the people? The time is here...now. stockpile some food before the truckers all go bankrupt and stop hauling it...Our entire food warehouse is in those semi's. When those truckers go under, the food will rot in the fields.

I'm hoping that comment about our economy being diversified is satire DK. ha ha Coal could do a lot for our state. But, I'd really like to see the services sector double or triple. I'm personally not a fan when people think of WV and they think of coal. It's just not something that should characterize WV.

Our economy is quite diversified...think about it...its regional too...chicken farms in the EP...chemical in the Ctown/Hton areas.
3 trillion dollars of coal yet to be mined as is the Oil and Gas...wood products...UNTAPPPED WATER POWER...from 5 different rivers...water to sell to the entire world in the future...Wv could be the king of Waterpec.(waterproducingexportingcountries) no joke there, you will see it in your lifetime.
With all our coal...where is the product base for our people to work...plastics, lubricants, paints...no factories exist here!!! Just a few power plants....
The problem is business suffocation and political corruption...since 1863 and still going strong. We have a terrible reputation in other states...
one guy at a conference said: "West Virginia...ha ha ha...everybody from the dog catcher to the XXX wants a bribe...we don't do it that way anymore...screw them."

We should start a West Virginia Strategic Planning thread. I think I remember enough about it to get us started. Took a course in it, back when I was getting my Master's (took all 48 credits, paid for them all too!).
