I would like to look into purchasing a gift certificate for two for someone who I recently did business with. Does anyone know of any nice restaurants (steak, seafood, Italian) in Berkeley or Jefferson Counties, West Virginia? Or perhaps a spa? Pardon my ignorance. I am a northern Virginia resident. Thanks.

I am also a northern Virginia resident but I have several friends who live in the Eastern Panhandle. Shepherdstown has several very nice restaurants, I would recommend The Yellow Brick Bank or Stone Soup Bistro, I've eaten at both and absolutely loved the food options, especially the first one. If you like south east asian cuisine I would recommend kazu which is also on german st. (the towns main st.) they also have very good food. The Bavarian Inn which is a hotel but it includes an upscale restaurant as well, that may also be one of your best bets.

Future reference: a handy resource to use for this kind of question, especially if you're a traveler in US, is Zagat's guide. Up to date ratings using the categories matter most to diners, plus it helps you find those out of the way mom and pop places that excell at regional cuisine. Life is too short to eat lousy food.

website is Zagat Survey – Restaurants, Nightlife, Hotels & Attractions – Ratings and Reviews, and if you've got a web enhanced cell phone, zagat.mobi is free to download for access that way. Otherwise hard copies can be purchased at bookstores like barnes and noble or borders books. WV restaurants are due to be added this year, but I'm not sure if morgantown would be included. Meantime you're probablly better off following the advice posted by the other blogger.

Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown is good- Bavarian cuisine overlooking the Potomac river, very quaint.
James Rumsey Tavern at the Clarion Hotel in Shepherdstown is good
Kobe's Japanese Steakhouse in Martinsburg is really great- sushi and sasimi, great entertainment...
Toscana Bistro on King St. in Martinsburg is pretty good too.

I spoke with a friend today from the Eastern Panhandle and she informed me that there is a fairly new restaurant in Shepherdstown called The Press Room, apparently it's one of the best if not THE best in town now.
