Default Relocating to Morgantown, WV

My husband and I are looking to relocate to the Morgantown area. We are interested in renting in the downtown area and looking for some nice apartments or lofts. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Default Morgantown Housing

You can go to the Morgantown Dominion Post online edition and search the classifieds:

http://olive.dominionpost.com/

Also, out of 179 places listed on forbes.com for best small places for business, Morgantown is #5! See this link:

You can also go here for more info. on Morgantown:

I attended/graduated from WVU in the late 60s and early 70s. It was a nice place then. The enrollment and population has risen quite a bit since then. And it appears that the state has put a lot of money into building up WVU. Best wishes for your move!

Stay away from downtown area......traffic is bad and housing not so great mostly student housing. There is plenty of housing in Morgantown to choose from. Morgantown is pricey for WV. So rent will not be cheap whereever u decide. Cheat Lake area is the growing spot and if thinking of buying, best area for resell....Good luck.....Morgantown is a great town to live in!

Default Downtown Morgantown.

I have lived in the first ward area of morgantown for 21 years. It is a nice neigborhood with few college kids. there are some affordable rentals that are not the typical student housing but look to pay 700 or more per month. There are several properties for sale in South Park and first Ward if you are looking to buy. it is a great area for kids with many nearby activities. I live within walking distance of White Park, the Mon River Trail, and High Street.

Compared to the DC area, Philly Area, or any other east coast city Morgantown has no significant traffic problem. I commute from first ward to Star City everyday in less than 20 minutes each way. Even on Home football and basketball days the heavy traffic is totally gone in about 1 hour after the game. The Students can be problematic but overall they add to the value of the town. For instance, we have nice shopping areas because of students.

There are many nice things about living in Morgantown versus being out on the perimeter areas. First, house mounted postal boxes instead of a rural route mailbox on the side of the road or driving to the post office. Having restaurants that deliver. The availablity of high speed internet and cable TV. Having reliable city trash pickup. The availability of full time city police and city fire protection instead of the Bubba and Earl volunteer fire dept and over streched county deputies. Good quality schools and clean streets. Reliable city water and sewage services. Natural gas service instead of LP tanks or heating oil.

I agree... stay away from the direct downtown area, because that's where the college kids live and it does look like typical college housing. There are nice houses in the South Park area, just a few blocks from downtown near Morgantown High School. There are new condos popping up on the other side of town too, the Evansdale and Suncrest areas. The Waterfront Wharf Districts has new apartments and condos too. Be prepared to have some money saved for rent though!

The developers in Morgantown don't seem to know what a loft is...or how much cash they could make out of some empty warehouses downtown. But, boy oh boy...if you want a townhouse, there are approximately 5 billion of them being built right now.

I used to think Morgantown traffic was bad until I moved to the suburbs of Chicago. A bad day on Beechurst Ave or 857 in Morgantown beats a good day on most of the roads around here anytime!

Jeepgirl, Morgantown is a wonderful area to live! I don't know what your particular reasons are for wanting to live downtown, but if you aren't married to that idea, there are a lot of nice options in the outlying areas, depending on your budget. Can you give us some more info on what is bringing you to the city, how much you want to spend, etc?

I'm a displaced Morgantown native & WVU grad & I miss it every day! Living here in tabletop-flat northern Illinois just feels wrong to a hillbilly like me!

For a town of its size though, Morgantown traffic is horrid on Mon Boulevard/JerryWest Drive/Beechurst/University/Don Knotts Boulevard.

Oh, I'll give you that to be sure, that transition area from Mon Blvd to Beechurst to Univ Ave is a horrible bottleneck. It just pales in comparison to what I am used to now. Sometimes it is unavoidable to go through that area, but 9 times out of 10 there are a half dozen ways to get anywhere in Morgantown so it can be avoided. The 1 time that you can't avoid it is likely only because you have to go to something that is actually on that street. It used to drive my wife nuts when we first moved back there because she was trying to learn her way around & I never seemed to go the same way twice
