Hi everyone. I am relocating to the Weirton area as soon as the sale of my home closes escrow here in West Texas. I left WV back in the mid 70's (Clarksburg area) and was hoping to make some connections in Weirton to tell me a little bit about the town, things to do, places to go, etc. I'd appreciate any input y'all would like to share. I'm retired from the transportation industry and am not looking for employment so, I'm not concerned about the job market.

Thanks a bunch, LSR

My wife and I just moved to Weirton, WV. about 6 months ago. There are many attractions in the area. You have Pittsburgh, PA. about 30 miles away. Also, route 2 along the Ohio River is a very nice scenic drive. Wheeling Island in Wheeling, Wv. offers casino style gambling complete with slots and table games newly added. It is about 25 miles south. The Highlands in Triadelphia/Wheeling offers decent shopping/dining options and is still growing. They are actually supposed to put an amusement park in i hear, during the next several years. Be sure to check out Cabela's if you like the outdoors. Like hockey? We have the Pittsburgh Penguins about 45 minutes away, complete with the greatest player in the world, Sidney Crosby. Also, the Wheeling Nailers are a pens/Flyers minor league team that play in Wheeling's Wesbanco arena. Wesbanco offers motocross, concerts, and various other events. The world's largest teapot can be seen about 20 miles north of weirton in Chester, WV. along US route 30/ WV rt.2. Fort Steuben mall offers decent shopping. It is in Steubenville, OH. just 5 minutes from downtown Weirton. If you like history, be sure to visit the Indian burial mounds down in Moundsville, WV. It is about 40 miles south of Weirton. Do you like country music? Each year in July, St. Clairsville, OH. offers a major Country music festival with numerous acts. It is just 15 minutes west of Wheeling off of I-70. It's called "Jamboree in the hills." Be sure to visit Glen Dale, WV the home of country music superstar Brad Paisley. The high school he went to (john Marshall high school) is actually in one of his music videos. It is about 10 miles south of Wheeling on WV. route 2 south. Finally, for dining, Marland heights deli, Defelice Bros. pizza, Belmonte's Pizza, The Ville in Fort Steuben mall, Applebee's, Gus's Goodies, are all worth checking out. There are numerous Pizza/ Italian places all through Weirton/Steubenville worth checking out. The wife and I love it here.
Regards,

Dave Grayson

Howdy Dave, much oblidged for the input pard. I heard that downtown is pretty much a ghost town now. Any comments on the downtown area you'd like to add? I've been surfing the internet trying to locate some recent images of Weirton but, seems all I can find is photos of the old steel mill & river?

Default hello again

How did the move to Weirton go? Downtown is supposed to invest in new scenery and businesses, saw an article not to long ago. It took a hit when the mills closed, but it hopefully on its way back. Weirton Heights(Pennsylvania AVE and 3 springs drive have all the good dining and shopping, hotels, etc) Marland Heights, where my wife and I live has the nicest area to live in. Great people here too, very friendly. Downtown has a new tattoo parlor coming in and one of the old empty food joints just got sold so something should be going in there too. Check out Welcome to Top Of WV.Com or ask if ya have any other ??? Take care.

Dave

The question, such as What is Weirton,West Virginia like? It is what it is. I relocated to Weirton after living in Michigan for over thirty years. I was raised in Weirton. What a shocker upon my "return" to the valley. I predict that I will relocate within another year. Weirton's character has not changed. The "players" have changed, but the "game" is the SAME. I made a serious error by returning here. For years, I said, that I would return to Weirton after I retired from the "academic arena" in a large Michigan city. What a mistake. I should have remained where I was, or moved ANYWHERE except here. I will not "badmouth" Weirton. Its too painful to even discuss it here. I blame only ME. I should have come back here and thoroughly researched WEIRTON and would have run, taken a greyhound bus, a boat, a scooter, a cart, truck or anything moving to "GET OUT OF HERE."

Hmmmm .... over the course of the last three decades, Weirton's economic situation has certainly scaled back. There is no comparison between Weirton of thirty years ago and Weirton of today .... what exactly were you looking for when you returned? And it's not just necessarily Weirton ... the whole mid Ohio valley economy has tanked. I grew up in Hancock County also, and still have family who live there and who are pretty happy living there. Although I've never had a desire to live in Weirton, I'll probably consider moving back into the Hancock County area (maybe up into PA between Weirton and Pittsburg) when I retire ...... if I can ever retire!!!!

Yep .... researching before you move is always a good idea!

Best wishes.
