OK, i got a confirmation that the primaries will be held on 5/13, both R and D.
So, why did we have R convention today and why is it important?
Still confused. (still do not want Huckabee)

Not so much. The 1,133 that voted in the convention today decided that Huckabee gets 18 of WVs 30 delegates for the republican race. The rest of registered republicans will vote in May. This means the vote of a few counts more than the votes of the masses. It's this type of thing that makes some people apathetic. I will still cast my vote in May and if given a chance, I will cast my vote AGAINST this type of lopsided system.

OOoops I mistook things- I don't get to vote twice. Seems there were no candidates among dem and repubs who affiliated themselves with third party folks like me, so I am left out of this race entirely this round. Looks like I get to vote in WV afterall.

2. democracy in action means that everyone puts an oar in the water on election day and tells the government which way they want this ship we're on together steered.

A little known fact (sadly) is that we are not a democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic. If you recall the Pledge of Allegiance, "...and to the Republic, for which it stands...."

Aside from that, the average American is just too pathetic to go and try to change something. They are the ones who will continually tell you how corrupt the politicians are, and how they hate the new taxes forced on them, yet they didn't vote in the elections or at the referendums. That's exactly what the politicians like to see- APATHY. The average (majority)American is defeated, he will simply submit to what ever he is told to. More interested in what happening with Brittany Spears than to the Constitution.

A friend was at the convention today...he said they voted and Romney had the vote in the first round but it was not a majority...on the second vote McCains people voted for Huckabee... He said McCain was not there but Huckabee and Romney were there and spoke. He was disapointed because he knows McCain will reduce coal use...West Virginia here we go again...get ready for the food stamps...

Most disagree on the basis of semantics. Purist form, if time, definitions and evolution froze, you are correct, but...
I agree with wikipedias definition, which states that constitutional republics are a form of liberal democracy. (making democracy the header, constitutional republic being a subset thereof)

Here's a link that explains the difference for those who don't know what you're talking about.

Pledge of allegiance was an afterthought, designed as propaganda post civil war. It's existance doesn't change our gov't one iota, nor is anyone legally beholden to it beyond expression of courtesy or respect in ceremonies.
1st and 14th amendments say so.

We're probably two of a small group coherent enough to even debate the subject!! I agree with you that what we have is a sub-set of Democracy (majority rule). If we had a pure democracy, the rights of the individual could be voted away by majority. Essentially, mob-rule.

The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything. ~Joseph Stalin
