Harborlady, I know you are looking in the Huntington-Charleston area and I thought that you might find this article interesting. It speaks about the VA in Huntington and some of the new services it is providing as well as the quality of the local center. Since you all were talking about home services as well as VA med centers, I thought this might be pertinent.

Any vet can go to the VA web site and find out information.... U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
once there type in the area you are interested in for the nearest center & what they have to offer.

talk about serendipity with that article! ty tim and katie, much obliged.
I personally am not in need of medical care YET. Time marches on to the inevitable though, we all find ourselves there eventually. I've had to learn about senior issues due to my own family situation.
That new program for the troops coming home looks promising- compensated work therapy. Nothing so saps the human spirit than to tell them they can't. Especially military folks who are geared for can-do attitudes and teamwork. Hurts them in places that don't show up in xrays.

very comforting to know, since I no longer have a healthcare plan. Somehow I thought it was only if you had service related disabilities or completely homeless were you eligible. Thanks for the heads up.

West Virginia has the best free medical in the USA...no facility can deny people health care whether they can pay for it or not.
We, the citizens of this state bought and paid for the wonderful incredible medical center at West Virginia University that serves, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia.
I have never had the need to use it but my friends have and they tell the story of its excellence. If you are living here and you need medical help...come where you can get it free. If you carry insurance, they honor that too,

BTW, owning property does not cause you any problem in ANY low income assistance unless you rent it out or sell it, then you just have to do a spend-down untill the money you got when you sold it is gone. If you live in it, committee on aging will help with repairing anything from the roof to oil, etc. A volunteer does the work, if you have any money you would have to pay for lumber, or whatever, if you don't, they will get it done anyway. My Mom was in her 70-80 and had money, but still COA helped with repairs in her home. Fixed a chair, repaired a leak in the roof, etc.. They can also help in transportation, household/personal
Now if other counties are not this helpful, I don't know, but Hampshire County is good if you are low income.

Senior Housing/Retirement communities
We have family members who are looking for senior apartment complexes for retirement purposes, not low income housing, they will have $4000 income. In Ohio we have complexes that just rent to families 55 and older, their activities center around older couples, they go on bus trips, go gambling, tennis, swimming, golf, and a fitness center. The buildings are secured and well maintained. So I think what they are looking for are the same types of housing arrangments, my sister and her hubby are looking for in West Virginia, they were looking at Clarksburg, Parkersburg, Moundsville, and as far as Charles Town but are open to new places. My brother in law likes the casino, so they want to be close to one! Any info would be helpful!

No one has any insight to West Va apartment for retiree's
I joined this site, since I have always received good information and advice. But now I have a sister who doesn't use the internet and she is in need of info and no one has answered my request! They are looking for senior apartment complexes in the state who cater to 55+ and older, I don't want to call them seniors, but are very active, and getting ready for a move and they need insight. They have visited the area but always think that local folks have more insight to where the safest places to live, an apartment for a year and then hopefully to buy in a senior development. So she is hoping to get some info, has to be near a casino, have grocery ctores, cable tv, and a safe area, next she needs to get a computer and do her own research. That's about it!
