Hello all,

It looks as if I will be moving to the Morgantown area with my family in the near future. We are a mixed couple and looking forward to new opportunities both professionally and socially. I just wanted to touch base (I know I'm resurrecting a 4+ year old thread) with the regulars and see how things are going.

I spent last weekend in the Morgantown/Cheat Lake area and absolutely love it! Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Morgantown. I believe we are a welcoming and inclusive community here, and are a place where hard work is rewarded and opportunity is abundant. In short, we are blessed. You and your family can prosper here, and our community's uncommon assets will be a blessing to you too.

What sort of mixed race couple are you? As a hispanic in a mixed race relationship who attended WVU, this piques my curiosity !

Thanks for responding.

I am 1/2 African American and 1/2 Hispanic and my wife is Polish. I'm relocating next month due to a new job.

In an effort to save money while becoming familiar with the area, I'll be renting for about 3 months at West Run Apartments while my wife stays in home. I've read some internet comments on apartmentreviews/com and its rated a 2.2/5 which isn't very good. From what I gathered, its heavily populated by college students which I am ok with. I figured that it would be ok to pick up a short term lease until June/July for $400 a month. Is anyone familiar with that area? I believe its off of 119 and West Run Road.

How about banking? Can anyone comment on experiences with Huntingdon Bank?

My question about "insights" earlier was a bit vague. Have any of you relocated to the area from another state? If so, what was the most important aspect of your move?

To be completely honest, the last time I was at West Run, it was a dump. But it's under new management now and I've heard that things have improved a good bit. Three months there definitely won't kill ya. There's far worse out there lol. Living there, you'll be really convenient to Suncrest Town Centre with a brand new Kroger (grocery store), some retail, chain restaurants, etc. Traffic on that end of town gets really bad during rush hour, but you'll get used to it and eventually discover all the different ways to get to a certain location. Regarding banking, I use PNC Bank because it's affiliated with the university. There's a branch in the Mountainlair (student union) and in Suncrest Town Centre, but that's the extent of their presence here at the moment. I have no reason to complain. It seems to me that BB&T has a massive presence here, as do some banks that are more regional, like United Bank and Huntington Bank. As far as transplants, you're going to encounter a ton of people from out of state here. As the home of WVU, there's a constant influx of non-natives to Morgantown. You'll find that most non-WVians here are either from somewhere along the Northeast Corridor or Pittsburgh, but I've met people from Florida, Texas, Montana, Nevada, etc. So there's no need to worry about being alone as a newcomer. I, myself, am here from Maryland.

Thanks DRS72. I appreciate the input. As far as West Run goes, I am going to avoid it because West Run road is a nightmare. Also, I am looking somewhere closer to work since that's pretty much all I'll be doing.

Any thoughts on Fairmont? Going through Craig's List, I found a few places that look like bedrooms/bathrooms rented out in a home. I don't mind renting in a home if the other tenants are friendly and somewhat sociable. Ideally, I'd like to rent a room or floor with the homeowner still living there.

I agree, West Run Road is a nightmare! I assume that since you're referring to Fairmont as "closer to work," you'll be working in the Fairmont/Clarksburg area. If that's the case, then West Run would've been quite a hike, so I think that's a good decision. Overall, Fairmont's nice. It has Fairmont State, Fairmont Tech Park, and is a growing commuter hub for both Morgantown and Clarksburg with some new housing (e.g. townhomes) going up just off the interstate. It's definitely more established and West Virginian, as a whole, than Morgantown, but that's not a bad thing and there are still lots of transplants. As far as renting a room/floor in a home, my intuition tells me that that would put you in one of two situations: (a) the other tenants in the home will be college students; or (b) the other tenants in the home will be lower income families. Keep that in mind when looking. Again, you said this will be a very temporary living arrangement, so even an unfavorable situation will probably be okay if you just grin and bear it. Once you start looking to get more established here, I would probably recommend townhomes/condos for most young, out-of-college couples. If you end up looking to buy a home, I'd recommend checking out Bridgeport if you prefer to stay at that end of North-Central WV. Ask away if you need anymore help!
