I am kinda torn where to move. My husband and I are sick of living in Virginia. we want to raise our children in small town. I am currently a GM in the hotel business and my husband is a mechanic so jobs wont be hard to find. But finding a good place to raise a family is hard. We want to buy a home for a decent price, good schools, and living near the mountains would be great! So West Virginia or Tennesse. Suggestions on towns or towns to stay far from!! We live right outside of DC so we have been to WV often, and with TN we have only visited major town Nashville, Knoxville, gatlin ect
In WV, check out Elkins and Lewisburg. A few thousand in population, 1/2 to 1 hour from the mountains. Somewhat bigger cities, but a bit further from the mountains, would be Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg/Bridgeport, and Princeton.

thank you!
In spite of both being regarded as "hillbilly country" there is a world of difference between them. Taxes for one. Tennessee soaks their people in comparison to West Virginia, I have been there many times and the sales taxes always raise my eyebrows.
Sales Tax -
WV - 6.0%
TN - 9.8%
Property taxes for an average home per year -
WV - $615.00
TN - $1,041.00
State Income Tax -
WV - 6.5%
TN - 0.0% except for investments, 401ls, funds, interests and dividends which are taxed at 12.5%
Here is an article from the The Atlantic the has an expose on the tax structure of Tennessee, calling it the most regressive in the nation:
Don't throw away VA just because of your experience in NOVA.
A charming small town with good schools is Abingdon, VA, which is right on I81 20mins north of the TN state line, so there are a lot of hotels, including the Martha Washington, for job opportunities that might not exist in other small towns more off the beaten path. There is also the Virginia Creeper Trail that will take you into the Mountains and the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area.
