Visiting Jolo, WV, Church of the Lord Jesus
Hello all. I am interested in visiting this church. I am not wanting to make light of their worship style and I'm not there to take pictures or video or bother a soul. I'd just as soon be unnoticed. I have always been fascinated by the faith of the people is serpent handling churches and would like to see such a service.
Does this church have a problem with visitors and does anyone know if the website with the 1pm start time is accurate? Thank you.

Well, I didn't expect the pastor to reply to this - more like someone else who visited there out of curiosity.

I have never gone, but I've thought about doing it. If I did I would just be friendly and respectful and sit in the back and observe. If I made it to the end of the service I would thank them for having me and smile and be on my way and not make a big deal out of it.

I saw a special on television a couple of years ago on such a church located in Jolo,WV. Not making fun or anything but it kind of scared me (I have a phobia about snakes!)

Hello Grawburg. I have been to the Jolo church once last year. They are extremely nice, friendly folks who truly believe. I felt very welcome. The music is fantastic, almost hypnotic. Pictures and video were taken and it was not frowned upon. I hope you have a chance to attend.

I'm guessing that "serpent handler" isn't a real poster - but I was recently told that the pastor had died and the church was closed. Can anyone confirm this?

Hello Grawburg. Yes the pastor died quite some time ago but the church is still active. I've been in touch with Melissa Evans about their homecoming service on Saturday evening August 30th. She said they will be there and I think the service is scheduled for around 7:00 or 7:30. We went last year, not many attended. Dewey Chaffin is not well and will probably not attend.
Have you read the book The Serpent Handlers by Fred Brown and Jeanne McDonald? One of the sections of this book is about the Jolo people.
