I forgot to give you the link for the Huntington Quarterly. Probably wouldn't be your main job but you might be able to do some writing for it on the side. They do some nice articles about various things like the "We Are Marshall" movie, Matt Lauer and how he used to work in Huntington, Troy Brown (Pro Football player) and his family that live in Huntington, etc.
Welcome to Huntington Quarterly Magazine Online
Other media outlets just so you have them:
WSAZ - HomePage Local News, Severe Weather and Breaking News Coverage for West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky
WOWK-TV | Live and Local
WCHS-TV/DT The Charleston - Huntington West Virginia News Leader
News Talk 800 WVHU - Huntington, WV | 1230 WIRO - Ironton, OH | 1600 WZZW - Milton, WV
Here's a good wikipedia article about WSAZ with some interesting facts, this being the most interesting IMHO "the Huntington-Charleston market, the second-largest television market (in terms of area) east of the Mississippi River." Here's the link for the rest.
WSAZ-TV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Let me know if you would like to know anything else.

I can not believe that you would say such ugly things because you drove through a town. West Virginia is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever lived. I'm sure that if you took the time to invest the actual crime rates in Nitro or any of the other bigger cities in WV such as Charleston or Morgantown you would see that the crime rates are lower in those towns than just about anywhere else. West Virginia is a great place to raise your family, make friends that last a lifetime, and to truly live a peaceful life style. I find the people in WV to be nonjudgemental and plain happy to be.

Hmmm more facts needed here.... fact is, the pollution incident at nitro happened just about over 20 yrs ago, has been dealt with directly, and isn't on the radar with EPA as priorities are concerned the way texas and new jersey are firmly entrenched in their multiplier dockets. Fact is the moderate level of pollution in question headed north along with opinions2, which is kinda comical if you think about it. I was so afraid of being shot that I ran down range! hahahaha
Fact is crime in WV is statistically being imported from places like detroit, who are exploiting a soft housing market to set up shop for drug dealing which they've perfected elsewhere. So in other words, WV is being burdened with the riff raff from other states. Hardly fair to judge based on that, but anyone who would doesn't need to bother hanging around to find out. Best you be on your way.
Speaking as riff raff from another state, WV has been generous enough to adopt me, and hopefully they won't have regrets when I bring my potato salad (without mustard and sweet relish) to our 4th of july block party.
To the original poster of this blog, the advice my neighbors would give you is to get the job first, then decide where to live. Housing is incredibly affordable in WV but commuting can get expensive with gas being what it is nationwide. Keep the horse in front of the cart as it were. Good luck!

Not just a city of numbers...
I went to school in Morgantown and taught at WVU for several semesters. Your basic classes may be in the hundreds, but by the 300 level, they tend to thin out in major areas. I taught a series of freshmen level classes and never had more than 29 students per class, each of whom I tried to get to know. To whomever felt that they were on their own constantly, my heart goes out to you. However, that being said, there are many great programs on campus to help students feel like less of a number. Student Support Services, Honors College, McNair Program... are just a few. Most of the advising is done by departments now, not by the generic advising center, especially journalism. Even pre-journalism majors are advised by the department now. Additionally, some departments have mentoring programs and interest clubs.
Traffic can be a pain. However, after living in some larger cities, it's nothing in comparision to 5 o'clock rush hour. For anyone who finds Morgantown traffic to be too much, I suggest the Dan Ryan in Chicago. Football games are hectic, so just allow for extra time and learn the back ways. For parking, through the city you can purchase a parking spot in a garage for a monthly or yearly rate. Just go to the court house on Spruce Street. It'll save you money in metered parking. Housing costs are higher in Morgantown becuase there is a housing shortage. For apartments, look in the Ruby hosipial area. Avoid Sunnyside. The campuses are spread out, but within a 20 to 25 minute walk, if public transportation is unavailable at the time. However, once you are in your major, you usually stay on one particular campus. With the exception of engineering, visual arts, music, performing arts, education, agriculture and consuemr sciences, and health sciences, most departments are located on the downtown campus. A few of the mandatory classes for most majors are taught on both campuses.
New developements are going up all the time. There is a decent selection of restaurantes, from chains to mom and pop establishments. Maxwell's, Pita Pit, Glass House Grill, DP Dough, Los Mariachis, and Colosantes were always my favorites. Bars are ok- usually overcrowed; beware the most popular spots as they serve the cheapest drinks. The Brew Pub has really good beer and a nice deck. I also recommend checking out the Cheat Mountain Winery. I was never much of a shopper, so I really did not see a deficit in the selection of stores.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. I lived there for over six years, and have seen the area grow and change.

Try Pittsburgh. Low cost of living, big city amenities, and you'd probably have a good chance to get into journalism.
