Apparently a private land owner (probably a wealthy out of the region lumber organization) has purchased land that includes 200 miles of the trail system, and the loss of that mileage is a possibility.
Hard to understand how they could not have signed agreements of permanent right of ways that would transfer with ownership but I know very little about how these things work.
On the other hand, if the new owner(s) can put together something beneficial to the economic development of the area, it will work out for the best.
From what I could find, it looks like there was no deal able to be made and it was shut down. More trails have been added since then though. They are talking about expanding them into Wayne County as well. From what I've seen, dealing with any trail system on private land is a nightmare. Every time the property is sold, this concern is raised. The Kanawha Trace Hiking trail in Cabell and Putnam counties has the same problem.

Likely has to do with liability issues. ATV riding does have significant dangerous aspects involved with it, and there would be liability for property owners permitting it to take place on their lands. If it is on private property, look for an increase of injury lawyer advertisements in that area.
