My daughter is going to be in the panhandle Labor Day Weekend and would like information on taking the train into DC for a couple days.
Are there places (paid or free) she could park her car overnight Sat and Sun and return on Monday?
Plans to take the train to the main station downtown (Union Station??) then meet up with our son for the WVU--VT football game Sunday evening and return to the eastern panhandle on Monday as I understand it.
All help is appreciated....where in the EP is the best place to catch the train for this trip? Cost of the train??
I've taken MARC to visit friends out in the Panhandle and while it is an efficient method of transportation, I do not believe the Brunswick Line (the one that runs out to the Panhandle) has service on the weekends. I mention this because I couldn't fully tell from your post if she was thinking of going in on Saturday or not. In addition, the line only runs in the direction of primary commuter flow so therefore the trains run to DC in the mornings and then away from the City in the evenings. She would need to go into DC on Friday morning and come back with the train on Monday afternoon/evening. Pay close attention to the schedule as well because not all of the Brunswick Line trains go to West Virginia, some start/ stop in Brunsiwck, MD. I think I posted the most up-to-date schedule below.
Yes. Our granddaughter as a soccer match Saturday morning and she wanted to go to DC on Saturday afternoon.
Sounds like she is just going to have to drive on over to DC herself.
Thanks for the reply.
The only other option on a Saturday would be the Amtrak Capitol Limited, it stops in Martinsburg and Harpers ferry on Saturday. It stops in Martinsburg at 11 AM and stops in Harpers Ferry at 11:30 AM unfortunately.
It might be better to drive to the end of a metro line and ride it into the city instead. There normally isn't much congestion on Saturday if you are going to Shady Grove (red line) and I am pretty sure they have overnight parking there too. There were a few stations shut down last weekend when the family and I went down and we had to switch over to a bus, but other than the 30 minutes or so it added to our trip, it was no big deal.

That is an option I was going to suggest - there is a ton of parking at the Shady Grove station at the end of Metro's Red Line close to I-270. Metrorail is becoming more reliable once again now that we are finished with the 'Safe Track' maintenance surges which were shutting entire sections of various lines for extended periods of time.
I have rode it into D.C. but not from the eastern panhandle. I would do as others have recommended just study the routes, stops and parking and drive to the one closest to you.
Amtrak is an option from Martinsburg it's a 2 hour ride though and 17 bucks one way at the minimum on a holiday weekend like that. As others have said the MARC train doesn't go clear out there on the weekends.

The original post mentions that the daughter wants to go into DC for "a couple of days". I've only used the Metro for a day, and I thought that overnight parking in the metro lots was not allowed. Anyone know if that's true or not?

That is what I am thinking as well. She is going to look into it and see for sure.
